SIXTY YEARS AGO
Application for a club beer licence for Brandon’s Sunnyside Golf Course has been approved by the Manitoba Liquor Control Commission. The approval was announced this week.
Warmer weather and good moisture conditions have brought about good crop prospects in most areas of Saskatchewan, the Dominion Bureau of Statistics reports. Generous rainfall benefited most areas of Manitoba, and crop prospects appear excellent in many parts of Alberta.
FIFTY YEARS AGO
The Swing bike is the new sensation this summer. You can ride it like a normal bike or allow the rear wheel to swing out and over.
Robert McConnell of Hamiota was the winner of the lieutenant-governor’s medal for diploma science-based programs at Red River Community College in Winnipeg. McConnell was top student in his class with a perfect 4.0 average while also participating in intramural basketball, badminton and archery.
Unsealed letters and open-window envelopes are now prohibited by Canada Post offices.
FORTY YEARS AGO
The Beaver Dam Country Rock Festival, a three-day blowout held 160 kilometres northeast of Brandon, proved to be more of an endurance party than a music festival for most of the 10,000 fans in attendance. Major acts included blues legend James Cotton, blues guitarist Stevie Ray Vaughan and the reborn group Harlequin.
Canada Post raised the ire of Ninga residents this week as it announced plans to close the post office and move the services to Boissevain by Aug. 2.
THIRTY YEARS AGO
Canada has entered a new era of unemployment insurance that business leaders say is necessary for economic viability. Under the new system and the new name of Employment Insurance, people who lose their jobs face tighter rules for collecting benefits. They’ll receive less money for a shorter time.
Brandon police have reopened the 11-year-old unsolved murder investigation of Barry George Levins, stating that they had received new information.
TWENTY YEARS AGO
When 55-year-old Wayne McClelland uncovered three Set for Life symbols on his $5 scratch-and-win lottery ticket last week, the Deloraine convenience store owner couldn’t believe his eyes. But instead of calling his wife, Jan, to tell her they just won $1 million, Wayne headed to the golf course to play a few holes. The McClellands are the latest couple from Westman to strike it big with a scratch-and-win ticket. On June 2, Carmen and Jeff Anderson of Brandon won $1 million with a Set For Life ticket.
TEN YEARS AGO
The Women’s Resource Centre says reports of “victim blaming” by Brandon police officers who respond to domestic violence calls is common, and it calls for better training for officers. The centre’s executive director, Brandy Robertson, says the centre and police work well together to address domestic violence under the recently introduced community mobilization program, but more needs to be done.
The number of people the Brandon School Division pays more than $100,000 grew by one-third to total 40 employees this year over last, and, unlike previous years, included two teachers.
