SIXTY YEARS AGO
L.E.R. Joyce said goodbye to nurse Judy Smith of Brandon after his stay in the hospital, where he received an apparently successful corneal transplant in his left eye. The transplant is the first performed at the hospital.
Four North Dakota visitors to the Provincial Exhibition walked away from a shattered helicopter shaken, but unhurt. The helicopter, flying from the exhibition on short passenger trips, lost the stabilizing tail rotor as it approached the landing area.
FIFTY YEARS AGO
Dr. Lloyd Delmage, president of Brandon University since 1970, has announced he will resign from the position next year. He plans to continue teaching.
FORTY YEARS AGO
The August 1986 issue of Trade and Commerce magazine will feature Brandon as the city of the year. This will include a factual report on all phases of business development currently taking place in the city and opportunities for future development.
The Centennial Library-Arts Centre of Western Manitoba will finally be completed more than two years after it officially opened. City council approved $24,522 worth of renovations to an empty area in the centre’s basement. The Red Cross Society is expected to move into the space Sept. 1.
THIRTY YEARS AGO
Volunteers at the Habitat for Humanity site at 731 Rosser Ave. East will begin building today. A fundraising barbecue will also take place at the site and be attended by former governor general Ed Schreyer.
TWENTY YEARS AGO
Leech Printing has recently bought out Print Master, a small local company owned and operated by Doug Wotton for 20 years. The general sales manager for Leech Printing, Gord Boultbee, said the opportunity arose when Wotton decided to sell to move on to a new career. Leech Printing purchased the equipment and account lists, while Wotton sold the building separately. Leech also took Print Master’s one employee on board in its main office on Braecrest Drive. The addition of Print Master allowed Leech Printing to open a third location last month. Quick Print Downtown is located in the back of IMG on the corner of 11th Street and Rosser Avenue.
TEN YEARS AGO
The deteriorating Eighth Street bridge is slated to be demolished in November. Coenraad Fourie, the city’s manager of development and transportation, said the goal is to co-ordinate with the specialized contractors working on the First Street bridge through Manitoba Infrastructure.
Two weeks after refusing to join Ottawa and eight other provinces in boosting Canada Pension Plan benefits, Manitoba is now prepared to sign the deal, Premier Brian Pallister said Thursday. The province has an assurance from the federal government that several Manitoba proposals to improve CPP will undergo additional research and analysis, he said in a news release.
