Local teen violinist Gillian Carrabré will be flying to Montreal today to spend a month rehearsing with the National Youth Orchestra of Canada. After auditioning in February, she was the only musician from Brandon to be chosen to play with the prestigious ensemble and the only string player from this province.
A book signed by Prime Minister Stephen Harper was among auction items that raised thousands of dollars for charity in the name of a Swan Lake boy fighting his second bout with cancer. Inspired by 11-year-old Coleman Sierens, who’s waiting for a bone marrow donor, Manitobans raised the money for the charities that have given the boy hope. “People gave $17,000 to charity, it was wonderful,” auction organizer Tasha Deschambault said. The book signed by Harper sold for $65, Deschambault said.
TEN YEARS AGO
The awards keep piling up for Matt Klassen. One day after being named one of four Manitoba High Schools Athletic Association scholar athlete recipients, the 17-year-old from Glenboro received two more awards Friday. Klassen was named both the MHSAA A boys’ athlete of the year and the province’s top overall male athlete Friday in Winnipeg.
Roughly 220 young people crossed the threshold into “real life” on Friday afternoon during the 2016 Vincent Massey High School convocation ceremony. Graduates in purple robes filled the floor of Westman Place while hundreds of friends and family looked on from the arena stands — periodically erupting in hoots and hollers when each grad collected their diploma.
Friday morning’s fire at Ambush Paintball left the business’s facility in almost complete ruin, said its owner, Steven Latell.
