SEVENTY YEARS AGO

The Brandon Kinsmen Club, which in the last 10 years has built a $90,000 stadium for the city and spent more than $45,000 on the construction of a zoo in the provincial exhibition grounds, last night continued its program of contributions to the major needs of the community with a $30,000 pledge to the Brandon General Hospital building fund campaign.

Students of Alexander School planted a tree in honour of T.W. (Tommy) Benn, who for 17 years was caretaker of the school and a general good pal of the students.

An independent British Columbia theatre company is breathing life into a tired, old Prairie drive-in. The Harris Road Entertainment Group — which owns three theatre complexes in communities near Vancouver — purchased Brandon’s Lucky Star Drive-In this spring.

TWENTY YEARS AGO

A Brandon man who was severely burned in an apartment fire says he’s grateful for the heart-warming support shown by friends, and even strangers. Donations have flowed in from generous Westman residents who want to help 23-year-old Dustin Klyne put his life back together as he recovers from second- and third-degree burns.

Brandon’s vacant University ward has its first declared candidate for city council. Damon Roth, a 31-year-old information technology instructor at Assiniboine Community College, has thrown his hat into the ring to replace retiring councillor Rick Chrest.

TEN YEARS AGO

The Brandon School Division will have nowhere to put 400 kids if a new south end school isn’t open by 2020 as promised, a promise that was ignored in Tuesday’s provincial budget. The NDP pledged the school would be built, Brandon school board chair Mark Sefton said this week, but that commitment is not binding on the Pallister government.

The Keystone Centre has signed on with a California-based company for its ticketing and online marketing services. Spectra by Comcast Spectacor will begin services this summer.
