Ky Solomon is retiring from softball a winner. The 18-year-old infielder from Shoal Lake spent last season at North Dakota State College of Science (NDSCS) in Wahpeton, N.D., where the team won the National Junior College Athletic Association’s Division 3 national championship on May 25 in Syracuse, N.Y. Heavy rains in the Brandon area have washed out roads and many basements are flooded.

The appointment of Squadron Leader David Pue of Brandon to the post of assistant secretary to the Canadian Joint Chiefs of Staff in Washington, D.C., has been announced by Air Force headquarters in Ottawa.

SIXTY YEARS AGO

A large timberwolf, 148 pounds, 70 inches tip to tail, 37 inches high and nine inches ear to ear, which killed at least eight calves, was destroyed with a bait and cyanide gun trap in the area of the Assiniboine River north of Glenboro.

The Gemini 9 astronauts rode their tiny spaceship to near-perfect landing in the Atlantic Ocean today, climaxing a sensational, often-troublesome flight highlighted by Eugene A. Cernan’s record space “walk.”

FIFTY YEARS AGO

Nine-year-old Chris Brown was in satisfactory condition in Brandon General Hospital yesterday after he and 11-year-old Darryl Hicks were buried when an earth wall caved in at a housing construction site at Pembina Place. The boys were rescued by Larry Budzinski, a government employee, and Bob Nevill, an Earl Haig school teacher, after hearing a faint cry for help.

FORTY YEARS AGO

Canadian Ukrainian Catholics have an obligation to the church to have large families and encourage their children to become priests and nuns, the head of the Ukrainian Catholic Church said yesterday at St. Mary’s Ukrainian Catholic Church in Brandon.

A family-farm protection bill that contains new sweeping measures to help Manitoba’s farmers who are deep in debt keep land, machinery and livestock has been printed and distributed in the provincial legislature.

THIRTY YEARS AGO

An independent British Columbia theatre company is breathing life into a tired, old prairie drive-in. The Harris Road Entertainment Group which owns three theatre complexes in communities near Vancouver purchased Brandon’s Lucky Star Drive-In this spring.

Lyn Fefchak of Virden and Brandon’s George Gooden were honoured by Child and Family Services of Western Manitoba last night. About 200 people were on hand for the organization’s 97th annual general meeting, where Fefchak and Gooden were presented with plaques and proclaimed as honorary life members of CFS.

TWENTY YEARS AGO

Manitoba’s newest millionaire was announced yesterday, and the 33-year-old Brandon woman is taking her sudden windfall in stride. Carmen Anderson won a free scratch and win ticket last week after cashing in an old Set For Life ticket she’d had lying around for nearly a month. The new millionaire is the 94th lottery winner in Manitoba to take home $1 million or more, and the fifth from Brandon. Anderson opted to take the immediate $1-million payout, rather than the $1,000 a week annuity, worth a combined $1.3 million.

TEN YEARS AGO

A man was airlifted to hospital in Winnipeg for burn-related injuries after the all-terrain vehicle he was driving caught fire on Saturday afternoon. The situation unfolded in a ditch along Veterans Way near CFB Shilo just before 2:30 p.m. The torched metal frame of the ATV, a pair of men’s sandals and a set of orange goggles was all that was left at the scene when The Brandon Sun arrived. According to Brandon Fire and Emergency Services Acting-Lt. John Houlihan, the driver of the side-by-side ATV was following behind a friend who was driving a dirt bike when the blaze started.

Former Canadian teen idol and singer Bobby Curtola has died. He was 73. His death was announced Sunday in a statement from his children, who called Curtola “an amazing man who did so much for the people in this world.” A teen idol in Canada during the early ’60s, Curtola also made his mark internationally in 1962 with the singles “Fortune Teller” and “Aladdin.”
