SIXTY YEARS AGO
Four names will be on the ballot in Brandon constituency when voters go to the polls June 23 to elect the next Manitoba government. The candidates are R.O. Lissaman, Progressive Conservative; Terry Penton, Liberal; Ben Van Hoffen, Social Credit; and Harold Weitman, NDP.
A record enrolment of nearly 2,200 students from 20 states and provinces have pre-registered for the 11th annual Music Camp held each summer at the International Peace Garden.

The cable television industry acted yesterday to establish a pay-television corporation and said broadcasters will be invited to join in launching a national pay-TV system.
Walden Industries, a farm implement manufacturing company which employees 225 people in Virden, has officially gone into receivership.
FORTY YEARS AGO
Six RCMP officers got a hero’s welcome yesterday at Dinsdale Park, the finishing point for their 220-kilometre Run for Cancer.
About 200 southwestern Manitoba motorists were among the 1,400 provincewide who were given tickets for not buckling up during the first week of a seatbelt crackdown. Brandon RCMP said 177 motorists received $24 tickets and 119 passengers were given warnings in southwestern Manitoba.
THIRTY YEARS AGO
Sgt. Dale Oleschuk was awarded the Lord Strathcona Trust Medal of Excellence during the annual inspection of the 82nd Royal Canadian Air Cadets yesterday at the Brandon Armoury. The graduating cadet was one of 27 across Canada to receive the rare honour.
McKenzie Seeds will continue its 100th anniversary celebrations this weekend with an old-fashioned picnic by the river. The seed company will erect tents and bring in picnic tables to set the stage for a party at the McKenzie Distribution Centre on Eighth Street.
TWENTY YEARS AGO
The Brandon Chamber of Commerce marked a couple of firsts with the inauguration of its new president during a luncheon at the Victoria Inn yesterday. The incoming Nonny Cancade is believed to be the first president of Indigenous descent, and at 32 years old, may very well be the youngest president in the 123-year history of the Brandon chamber.
TEN YEARS AGO
The unpaid bill wasn’t the only thing that a dine-and-dasher left behind — he also left his 10-year-old niece in his dust. A server at the restaurant chased down the suspect and retrieved the girl, who staff then consoled. “They did great,” Double Decker Tavern and Restaurant owner Allen Shalwani said of his employees. “But I will explain to them that next time this kind of thing happens just let him go, instead of putting themselves into danger.”
It is better to live in Whitehorse than Brandon after the city plunged more than 50 spots in MoneySense’s annual “Best Places to Live in Canada” rankings. After just missing the Top 25 last year, the Wheat City now stands as the 82nd-best city to live — one worse than Whitehorse at 81. Had Brandon held onto its 2015 ranking of 26th overall, it would have ranked higher than Winnipeg, which dropped five spots to 29th this year.
