Looking Back
The fifth and hopefully long-term home of the B.J. Hales Museum of Natural History was officially opened in the lower floor of the McKenzie arts and library building at Brandon College.
A fire that broke out about midnight destroyed the town garage and warehouse in Hamiota. Also lost in the blaze was the town tractor and maintainer. The one-storey frame building has been a landmark in the town for more than 50 years.
FIFTY YEARS AGO
Brandon firefighters conducted a training session using the department’s latest acquisition — a new aerial ladder truck. The ladder was extended 95 feet to reach to the top of the fire hall on Princess Avenue.
Three major tire makers say they believe the day of the spare tire is coming to an end. They want to replace the conventional spare tire with temporary spares or tires that can run temporarily even after a puncture.
FORTY YEARS AGO
Brandon school board trustees were in a fighting mood after reluctantly passing a 1986 budget that will add an extra $70 to $80 to the average homeowner’s tax bill. Trustees are upset because the cost of running the division is going up by $2,216,390 — 8.5 per cent over last year — to $25,817,500.
A new bylaw being considered by city council will ban smoking in public places and compels owners of restaurants with more than 50 seats to establish no-smoking areas.
THIRTY YEARS AGO
What started off as an idea for a youth drop-in centre has grown into something much larger. This week, a group headed by Jim Welsh, originally working to open a downtown centre, will adopt the bylaws of the Boys and Girls Clubs of Canada.
Former teen dance music queen Alanis Morissette walked away the big winner at the Junos — Canada’s annual music awards show. Morissette picked up five Junos, while Shania Twain won entertainer of the year.
TWENTY YEARS AGO
With the clock wound down to zero, Brandon’s firefighters are making a last-ditch effort to change city councillors’ minds on building their new fire hall at First Street and Rosser Avenue. About 12 members of the Brandon Professional Firefighters Association stood in front of the chain-link fence that guards the former Brandon Scrap Iron and Metal property yesterday. Council will debate whether to build a $16.6-million complex for its police and fire departments or just a $6.6-million fire hall at the site.
TEN YEARS AGO
Alia Alhmoud, 36, along with her husband Damran, 38, and their three children arrived in Brandon on Monday — the city’s first government-sponsored Syrian refugee family. The family had been living for three years in Lebanon, where they were able to build their own camp and live away from the crowd.
Gas prices in Manitoba could be pushing $1 a litre again by mid-June, but analysts say that summer road trip should still cost less than last year. That’s because local motorists were shelling out anywhere from just over $1 to as much as $1.22 for a litre of regular gas last summer, as a combination of record-high demand and record-low supplies kept pump prices elevated.
