SEVENTY YEARS AGO
Alf Saunderson, one of two charter members still active in the local St. John Ambulance brigade, was presented with a certificate for 30 years of service at a ceremony in Winnipeg.
Construction of a new swine and sheep building to replace the one destroyed by fire earlier this year will get underway as soon as weather permits at the Provincial Exhibition grounds.
SIXTY YEARS AGO
Two Brandon high schools will have new principals beginning next year. Don Cullen, the principal at Harrison since 1963, will move to Brandon Collegiate. Martin Chalaturnyk replaces Cullen at Harrison.
FIFTY YEARS AGO
Built in 1901 to serve the Western Canada Flour Co., an old single-leg grain elevator was moved onto new pads at the Manitoba Agriculture Museum at Austin to help mark the 50th anniversary of Manitoba Pool Elevators.
Harold Grundy, superintendent of Kelsey School Division in The Pas, has been appointed principal of Crocus Plains Regional Secondary School. He will take over from Jack Hill Sept. 1.
FORTY YEARS AGO
Congratulations go out to Christine Van Steelandt of the Deloraine 4-H club on being chosen the winner of the trip to Washington, D.C.
THIRTY YEARS AGO
Three new exploration projects are slated for southwestern Manitoba thanks to a $1-million grant from the Manitoba Petroleum Exploration Assistance Program. The projects represent a projected $5.44 million in new exploration in the region this year.
TWENTY YEARS AGO
Firefighters from the Riverside and Turtle Mountain fire departments were unable to save a 77-year-old grain elevator this morning in Dunrea, located south of Brandon on Highway 23. Thousands of dollars of grain burned up along with the elevator annex, while firefighters tried to prevent other buildings such as the municipal complex next door starting on fire from burning embers in the thick smoke that poured from the building. The privately owned elevator was located in the middle of town.
TEN YEARS AGO
Long considered an “outsider” in the conservative caucus, Inky Mark says the Conservatives have finished the job and removed him completely. He says the Conservative Party of Canada has given him the boot. Mark described the move to revoke his party membership as unusual, especially for a former sitting MP who was elected five times.
Brandon and Melita both broke record high temperatures on Thursday. Brandon hit 10.7 C to break a 1973 mark of 2.6 C. Melita reached 15.7 C to smash the prior all-time high of 2.8 C set in 2012.
