The Brandon School Board brought in a budget of $685,128 for its 1956 operations, showing an increase in almost all departments and raising the 1955 budget estimate by $76,422.

The Assiniboine Hospital and Brandon General Hospital have suspended visiting at the two facilities due to the high incidence of influenza and respiratory ailments in the city. Only members of the immediate family of seriously ill patients will be allowed access during the restricted hours.

Rivers town council has given the go-ahead to the Rivers-Daly Community Development Corp. to formulate development plans for downtown Rivers.
Mayor Elwood Gorrie reporting on a study made on Brandon’s transit system indicated that exact fare on buses “would be highly desirable.” At present, time is lost when bus drivers have to make change for passengers.

Aspiring actors made an unusual trek to Hartney, hoping to get a small part in a big movie. A crowd of dozens had gathered outside the Hartney Centennial Centre eagerly waiting for a chance to be cast as an extra in the feature film “The Lookout” starring Jeff Daniels, Joseph Gordon Levitt and Isla Fisher.
Nearly a century since the last one was built, Brandon will get a new downtown fire hall. City council, by a 8-3 count, last night said yes to building a new home for the Brandon Fire Department at the corner of First Street, between Rosser and Pacific avenues. In a 9-2 vote, council decided to put just a fire hall on that contaminated piece of land instead of building a larger, more expensive complex for both firefighters and police officers to work in.
TEN YEARS AGO
Manitoba’s Progressive Conservative leader has launched the party’s election campaign by invoking Albert Einstein and promising to roll back the provincial sales tax hike that was brought in by the NDP government. Brian Pallister told about 300 supporters in Winnipeg on Saturday that Einstein said problems cannot be solved in the same state of mind in which they were created. Pallister says Manitoba needs a new state of mind, and his party will bring it.
Showing few signs of trying to ease the nation’s tense political atmosphere, Republican front-runner Donald Trump is standing by his antagonistic campaign rhetoric, rejecting any responsibility for violence at his rallies and defending his supporters who have been charged with assaulting protesters.
