SIXTY YEARS AGO
Gemini 8 astronauts Neil Armstrong and David Scott soared into orbit today on humankind’s most difficult space venture. They began stalking a satellite across the sky in the first attempt to link up two orbiting vehicles.
The town planning advisory board cleared the way for a new medical clinic to be built in the downtown area of Brandon. The proposed new clinic will be built by Western Medical Clinic, currently located at 111 Ninth St., in the 100 block on Sixth Street in the former MacArthur’s Ltd. truck parking lot.
FIFTY YEARS AGO
Brandon school trustees have plotted out a budget of $9.9 million, with $4,033,650 of it to come from local taxpayers. That compares with a 1975 budget of $8.8 million, with a special levy last year of $3.23 million.
F.L. (Bud) Jobin of Flin Flon was sworn in yesterday as Manitoba lieutenant-governor at the legislative building.
FORTY YEARS AGO
Two Russian cosmonauts were orbiting Earth today on their way to the Soviet Union’s new space station Mir after a well-publicized and smooth launch.
Divers have recovered all four flight recorders and some of the five computers aboard the shuttle Challenger and they may provide valuable data about the space disaster.

Students from Brandon University snagged a top award at an international conference on entrepreneurship in Toronto. Garnet Radford, Donald Neufeld, David Jones and Kristi Bruce rubbed shoulders with some of the biggest names in corporate Canada as they vied for the entrepreneurial spirit award at the seventh annual ACE convention.
TWENTY YEARS AGO
It was all smiles and congratulations last night as the Keystone Centre’s Agricultural Centre of Excellence officially opened. Hundreds of visitors toured the new facility, enjoyed wine and hors d’oeuvres served in the stables and listened to Juno Award winner Amanda Stott perform live. Politicians from all three levels of government lauded the centre as a boon for Brandon and the province as a whole.
A growing dearth of nurses and doctors has claimed another victim in the Assiniboine Regional Health Authority — the Wawanesa Health Centre. As of 4 p.m. on March 24, the WHC will cease all emergency room and acute care services, said ARHA CEO Penny Gilson. The hospital’s only physician, Dr. Ernest Inegbu, will be on vacation from April 3 to May 14.
TEN YEARS AGO
The Brandon Wheat Kings have repeated as Eastern Conference champions. The Wheat Kings beat the Swift Current Broncos 6-2 at Westman Place on Tuesday for their seventh win in a row. It’s the first time in 20 years that the team has won back-to-back conference titles.
Manitoba has become the latest province to have a court grant a patient the right to die with the help of a doctor. Chief Justice Glenn Joyal made the ruling after a hearing Tuesday during which the patient’s application was unopposed. Joyal also granted a request not to identify the patient or any health-care professionals involved.
