SIXTY YEARS AGO
The House of Commons capital punishment debate intensified as abolitionists and retentionists tossed out Bible quotations and statistics for and against abolishing the hangman. By the end of the second day of debate, 27 MPs had taken part. Thirteen supported abolition, 12 supported retention and two were undecided.

Brandon’s first housing co-operative is ready to start its 75-unit townhouse and apartment complex, architect Louis Potkin told a meeting of Brandon Housing Co-op Ltd.
FORTY YEARS AGO
Brandon school trustees voted to cut the required course load from 10 subjects taken in French over three years of high school to a maximum of six subjects. Trustees hope a streamlined French immersion course will boost interest and lay the groundwork for an expanded program within three years.
THIRTY YEARS AGO
The Royal Canadian Legion athletic camp at the International Peace Garden continues to grow. After achieving a near record level of attendance last summer, the camp enters its 34th year of operation with the addition of two new camps. Rhythmic gymnastics returns after an 18-year absence and fishing has also been added.
TWENTY YEARS AGO
Minnedosa will receive $1 million for a water treatment plant as part of a federal and provincial infrastructure program, Vic Toews said this week in Niverville during his first public announcement as the federal justice minister. The Minnedosa treatment plant — partly funded by Husky Energy — will help meet the water capacity needs of the $120-million Husky ethanol plant under construction in the community.
TEN YEARS AGO
A massive search for Chase Martens, the toddler last seen on Tuesday evening, has evolved from frantic to sustained as it entered into its fourth night on Friday. More than 400 people on foot, horseback and ATVs spent Good Friday scouring terrain that includes creeks, fields, thick brush and farmland in the area north of Austin, a small community between Brandon and Portage la Prairie on the Trans-Canada Highway.
A longtime volunteer with “deep roots” in the east end will seek the Riverview ward seat in the upcoming byelection. Glen Parker, The Brandon Sun’s sales and marketing director, made the announcement on Thursday at the East End Community Centre, surrounded by approximately 20 supporters.
