SIXTY YEARS AGO

Construction has begun on the government bridge over the Souris River, one mile west of Napinka. The old bridge was condemned and torn down in March of last year, resulting in a four-mile detour.

The federal transport department announced that all Prairie flights by TransAir Ltd. of Winnipeg were to be discontinued on April 16. TransAir Ltd. operates the Prairie milk run in Manitoba and Saskatchewan, including the service between Winnipeg, Brandon and Regina.

FIFTY YEARS AGO

If you’re buying milk, bread or other perishable foods today, look for the words “best before” and a date somewhere on the product label. Effective today, it must appear on prepackaged perishable products with a shelf life of less than 90 days with the exception of fresh fruit and vegetables and in-store packaged meat, fish and poultry.

The Brandon West provincial Liberal association has elected its executive for the coming year: Eileen McFadden, president; Evelyn Wood and Glen Gurba, vice-presidents; George Shoemaker, treasurer; and Margaret Crofton, secretary.

FORTY YEARS AGO

Almost 500 non-smokers died each year from lung cancer caused by second-hand smoke, says a study by the federal health department.

The Canadian dollar tumbled below 70 cents US today, ending trading at 69.98 cents, a loss of more than one-third of a cent on the day and its lowest close since the worst moments of the currency crisis in early February.

THIRTY YEARS AGO

An inquest that could last almost a year begins today into the deaths of 100 babies who had heart surgery at Manitoba’s largest hospital since 1981.

The final tote-board tally at the end of the day at the third annual Lions Telethon, which was held over the weekend, was $62,800.

TWENTY YEARS AGO

Brandon’s YMCA building will turn 40 years old this fall, and its directors are searching for a new home to replace the aging facility. For nearly a decade, there has been talk about expanding the current building or finding a newer, larger home for the Brandon Family YMCA, and YMCA board president Tanya Knight said the board is now on the verge of making it happen. YMCA directors have looked at several possible locations for a new facility, she said, including the old Safeway building on Victoria Avenue and the former Fleming School site. No decision has yet been made, but Knight said one is “on the horizon in the near future.”

Brandon Mayor Dave Burgess threw the opening stone at the 50th annual ANAF Command Bonspiel at the Brandon Curling Club last night. The event continues throughout the weekend.

TEN YEARS AGO

In an effort to protect Clear Lake from zebra mussels and other invasive species, Riding Mountain National Park is reducing the number of access points. Boats will be able to launch from the Clear Lake Boat Cove and East End (at the Clear Lake Golf Course entrance), while launches at Frith Beach and Spruces day-use area will be closed.

The Crocus Plainsmen varsity girls’ basketball team will head off to Winnipeg next week to play for a provincial AAAA high school championship. Shanelle Haliuk scored 18 points and Faith Clearsky added 13 more and 11 rebounds as the Plainsmen won their interzone game 56-45 over the visiting Garden Valley Zodiacs on Thursday. Paige Donald added eight point and six rebounds for Crocus, while Talia Peters paced the Winkler-based side with 15 points.
