At its recent awards night, the Brandon Retriever Club gave Cec Leech the J.S. Matheson Trophy. Leech and his award-winning retriever, Pelican Lake Petie Two, received the most points in licensed trials for the year. Petie was high-point dog in Canada.

TWENTY YEARS AGO
A second soldier hurt in the rollover of an armoured vehicle several days ago has died of his injuries. Master Cpl. Timothy Wilson of Grande Prairie, Alta., died at a U.S.-run hospital in Landstuhl, Germany, early this morning. Another soldier, Cpl. Paul Davis, died immediately after and five other soldiers were injured when their light-armoured vehicle smashed into a taxi and flipped over. All seven were with the 2nd Battalion, Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry from CFB Shilo.
According to a private Environics survey obtained by the Winnipeg Free Press, Manitoba Premier Gary Doer remains the most popular premier in the land. “Gary Doer is once again the top-rated first minister in the country, with 77 per cent of Manitobans now voicing approval of the job he is doing (up seven points since the fall),” Environics said in its polling analysis.

The Manitoba Senior Baseball League is taking a summer off, with the long-term future of the AAA loop in doubt. League president Neil Franklin said on Friday afternoon that exhaustive efforts to find new teams to join the MSBL — which included putting feelers out across Westman, in Winnipeg and in Saskatchewan — ultimately failed.
A Progressive Conservative government will put an end to spotlight hunting in the province, the party’s critic for Conservation and Water Stewardship said Friday. Speaking from the Manitoba Wildlife Federation’s annual general meeting in Brandon yesterday, Shannon Martin said the practice of hunting at night using a spotlight is dangerous.
