Pay boosts for Brandon firefighters have been approved by the board of arbitration in Winnipeg. For acting chief, the board set a monthly salary of $300, captains will rate $290; senior lieutenants $280; junior lieutenants $275; drill master $290; mechanic $275; fireman fourth year $263; fireman third year $252; fireman second year $230 and fireman first year $215.

About 90 members of a West German army engineering test team are ready to fly home this weekend following three months of cold-weather trials on military equipment at CFB Shilo.

Sharon Ballance was crowned queen of Central Community Centre at a teen dance held last week. Susan Hayward and Sandra Law were chosen first and second princesses, respectively.

FORTY YEARS AGO

With the flick of a switch, the 200 kilometres between the province’s two largest cities disappeared yesterday when a two-way audio-visual link glowed to life between psychiatric hospitals in Brandon and Winnipeg. This allows Brandon Mental Health Centre patients to talk, screen-to-screen, with psychiatrists in Winnipeg.

THIRTY YEARS AGO

Concerned health-care workers continued their campaign against health-care cuts by surrounding Health Minister Jim McCrae outside a local hotel. McCrae was on his way to a Progressive Conservative party meeting at the Royal Oak Inn when he was met by about 25 frustrated health-care workers. Last week, the government announced it would open its $70-million-a-year home-care program to bids from private companies as soon as this summer.

TWENTY YEARS AGO

Paul Haggis got his start in show business as a kid, doing carpentry at a amateur theatre in his hometown of London, Ont. On Sunday night, Haggis received Hollywood’s highest honour — his film “Crash” won the best-picture Oscar. He and his friend Bobby Moresco also took home statuettes for best original screenplay. The film, a searing look at the intersecting lives of a group of Los Angelinos who confront the realities of urban violence and racism, pulled off one of the biggest upsets in Academy Awards history, topping “Brokeback Mountain.”

TEN YEARS AGO

The Brandon Wheat Kings scored four times in the final six minutes after letting an early lead slip away to beat the Moose Jaw Warriors 6-3 at Westman Place on Friday.

Boissevain farmers Ben and Lisa Heide were edged by Jason and Laura Kehler as Manitoba’s 2016 Outstanding Young Farmers recently in Winnipeg. The Kehler family farms 5,600 acres near Carman, growing potatoes, seed soybeans, corn, canola, oats, wheat, soybeans and edible beans.
