A bylaw authorizing the adding of through streets to the city map was given first and second reading at city council. The legislation, which would amend the traffic bylaw to make 34th Street a through street from Victoria to Richmond, Whillier Drive from Rosser to Victoria and Rosser from 19th Street to 26th Street, was in answer to recommendations by the special traffic board.

Building a fire hall directly opposite the Canadian Pacific Railway train yard — at Pacific Avenue and First Street — which carries deadly chemicals on a daily basis could spell disaster for the City of Brandon. It was that message the president of the International Association of Fire Fighters Local No. 803, Terry Parlow, took to Brandon City Council last night, as he tried to convince councillors to take a good look at the Fleming School site as a possibility for a future fire hall.

There’s now a little sizzle in the scheme to move Assiniboine Community College to the former Brandon Mental Health Centre property. The aspiring chefs and their instructors in ACC’s culinary arts program will be among the first occupants of the new college on the North Hill, the provincial government announced. Although the complete details still need to be finalized, the province says it will go ahead and negotiate with a group of Winnipeg developers on putting the culinary arts and hospitality programs into BMHC’s former nurses residence.

TEN YEARS AGO
