Research done by the Department of Highways shows a reduction in speed limits will not reduce the number of accidents. Eighty per cent of the accidents recorded in the province in 1974 occurred in urban areas where speed limits were 45 miles per hour or lower.

A fire that destroyed a 105-year-old church in Minnedosa this past winter was not an isolated act of arson, but part of an international movement with links to a Norwegian “death metal” musician, say justice officials. The allegation was made at a recent court hearing to determine sentencing for one of three people accused of torching the Minnedosa United Church in February. The three people charged in connection with the blaze have made appearances in Brandon court.

TEN YEARS AGO

The track facility at the Canada Games Sportsplex is in need of a major overhaul, as Brandon prepares to host the 2017 and 2018 Legion National Youth Track and Field Championships. A redevelopment proposal will be brought before Brandon City Council on Monday that calls for a new rubberized track to be installed to meet International Association of Athletics Federations requirements.

That shortcut on the way to school or work will cost you the big bucks — if you’re caught. The fine for trespassing on railway property is $215 under the Railway Safety Act. With tracks nestled between residential areas, railway officers say walking across or along lines is an issue in the Wheat City.

Hundreds of rowdy protesters broke through barricades and threw eggs at police Friday outside a Burlingame, Calif., hotel where Donald Trump addressed the state’s Republican convention. Several Trump supporters said they were roughed up, but no serious injuries were reported.
