Maj.-Gen. F.F. Worthington, Canada’s civil defence chief, inspected Brandon’s dike system during a stopover in the city.
Building permits approved during April totalled $763,395.
SIXTY YEARS AGO
Fred Woodfield, a member of the staff of Richmond Shoes on Rosser Avenue, was named clerk of the week by the Brandon Chamber of Commerce. Fred is the sixth clerk in the city stores to be honoured by the chamber.
E.A. Sundell has been appointed local commissioner for the census of population and the farm census, which begins across Canada June 1, 1966. He will administer the Brandon-Souris census district, No. 601-5.
FIFTY YEARS AGO
Carol Justice, a third-year voice major student at Brandon University, won the Brandon Sun Rose Bowl award at the music festival last evening. Miss Justice is from Dauphin.
Two Brandon University geographers say housing next to the river in Kirkcaldy Heights should never have been built where it could be threatened by flooding. This year, dikes had to be raised to ensure water from record levels on the Assiniboine did not inundate new and partially finished homes just west of First Street. Some basements were flooded by seepage.
FORTY YEARS AGO
Air Canada’s refurbished CF-TCC stopped at Brandon airport for a few hours last week as a part of a 32-day cross-Canada tour marking the airline’s 50th anniversary. The aircraft had a special significance for Brandon businessman Cec Leech. He was a pilot for Trans-Canada Air Lines (presently Air Canada) in its early days and flew the CF-TCC and its two sister aircraft — the CF-TCA and CF-TCB.
A Canso amphibian water bomber en route from Victoria to Thunder Bay, Ont., encountered difficulties after landing at the Brandon airport. The plane completed its landing roll on runway 14-32 but sank through the asphalt while turning. The runway was built during the Second World War. Getting the plane mobile is posing problems, however, as officials fear the necessary equipment might also sink.
THIRTY YEARS AGO
After nearly a century, the Manitoba government will get out of the telephone business after this year when it sells the Manitoba Telephone System for up to $750 million through a public share offering. The Conservative government announced the decision today.
TWENTY YEARS AGO
Canexus Ltd., a Brandon-based manufacturer of sodium chlorate — and the biggest industrial electricity customer in Manitoba — confirmed that a $70-million plant expansion has been put on hold and could be cancelled or downgraded if Manitoba Hydro goes ahead with plans to increase charges to industrial customers.
TEN YEARS AGO
With a demolition date looming, visitors to the International Peace Garden will get one last chance to pay homage to the Peace Tower this summer. The crumbling monument was scheduled to come down last fall, but the garden’s board of directors decided to hold off for one more season.
