SIXTY YEARS AGO
This week, after some 26 years, “Brandon’s finest” abandoned their station on the southeast corner of Seventh Street and Princess Avenue to the mercy of the gods and the wreckers. For the time being, Brandonites may pay their traffic fines at temporary police quarters in the former YMCA building at 241 Eighth St. The old police palace and Princess Avenue landmark will be demolished to make way for Brandon Consumer Co-operative Ltd.’s proposed $1-million redevelopment of the downtown block lying between Princess and Lorne avenues and between Sixth and Seventh streets.
FIFTY YEARS AGO
Four former employees of Brandon University were honoured at an afternoon reception earlier this week. Walter Bain, Donald Brown, Elwin Anderson and Edith Shipley received silver trays inscribed with their years of service.
Bea Jolly of Brandon was recently appointed girl guide commissioner for the Assiniboine area.
Virden’s largest employer, farm implement manufacturer Walden Industries Limited, went into receivership yesterday.
FORTY YEARS AGO
Clear Lake campgrounds were best described as a “war zone” after this long weekend. There were trees pulled up, signs removed, phone booths destroyed and 37 liquor-related charges, four impaired driving charges and one charge of assaulting a park warden.
The Brandon Family YMCA will be honoured by the Manitoba Heart Foundation tonight for becoming 100 per cent smoke-free, making it the only YMCA in Canada to receive the award.
Massey-Ferguson Ltd., one of Canada’s oldest companies, will soon change its name to Varsity Corp., a variation of Verity Plow Co., which Massey bought nearly 100 years ago.
THIRTY YEARS AGO
RCS Greenhouses of Waskada has arranged an alternate supply of fuel following closure of the Omega Hydrocarbons gas plant this spring. The new owners of Omega, Iunuvialiut Petroleum, closed the gas plant and cut back oil field production, closing nearly 20 per cent of its 286 wells in the area. Six of the 16 employees lost their jobs as a result of cuts last month.
TWENTY YEARS AGO
After being closed for 14 months, the Oakland Inn in Wawanesa reopened last week following extensive renovations. The Oakland Inn offers eight totally renovated rooms, a restaurant, bar and beer vendor. The restaurant and bar are open seven days a week. VLTs are on their way and a licensed patio is under construction.
TEN YEARS AGO
More than two weeks after 80,000 Fort McMurray residents were forced to leave their homes amid raging wildfires, Brandonites continue to donate their time and money to help those affected by the disaster. On Thursday afternoon, more than 350 people attended a fundraising barbecue hosted by elementary students in the playground of J.R. Reid School. Yesterday, Grade 10 students at Vincent Massey High School also handed over more than $2,800 they raised for the Canadian Red Cross during noon-hour fundraisers last week.
