SIXTY YEARS AGO
The skyrocketing costs of providing services to a growing city have once again defeated city council’s attempts to keep Brandon taxes down for 1966. As a result, ratepayers will face an increase of $4.44 for each $100 of taxes paid last year.
It’s going to cost more to get your hair cut in Brandon. Effective June 1, the price of adults’ haircuts will go up 25 cents to $1.50 for a straight cut and $1.75 for a brush or similar cut.

City council has given first reading to a draft bylaw aimed at clamping down on businesses illegally opening on Sundays. Reflecting council’s get-tough stand with offenders, the bylaw would boost the maximum fine from $100 to $1,000.

Western Co-operative Fertilizers is undertaking a $20-million expansion at its Brandon facility. The project, which will create close to 100 construction jobs, will provide the distribution facility with an assured supply of fertilizers.
TWENTY YEARS AGO
A Brandon high school student is among a handful of recipients of the University of Calgary’s most valuable undergraduate scholarship — a $60,000 ticket through school. Jodie Perzan, a Grade 12 student at Crocus Plains Regional Secondary School, was selected from hundreds of applicants worldwide to receive the university’s Seymour Schulich Community Service/Entrepreneurial Entrance Award, worth $60,000.
The Keystone Motor Inn is set to make some history in Brandon by having the city’s first rooftop patio. Hotel owner Gaynor Vivian said that the new patio will have a great view onto 18th Street and can seat anywhere from 60 to 80 patrons.
TEN YEARS AGO
A season filled with promise that resulted in a Western Hockey League title ended in disappointment for the Brandon Wheat Kings on Wednesday at the Memorial Cup. The Red Deer Rebels beat the Wheat Kings 2-1 in overtime on a goal by Evan Polei at the Enmax Centrium, leaving the WHL champions winless in three round-robin games and eliminated from the four-team tournament.
Stephen Harper is slowly closing his Ottawa office as he prepares to step down after serving for more than 14 years as a member of Parliament. The former prime minister and Conservative party leader is not expected to return when the House does next fall, already handing out new personal contact information to some as he prepares to launch his next career as an advocate for international causes that dominated his foreign policy while in office.
