A hardware store and funeral home, two of the four businesses destroyed at Belmont by fire on March 3, are being re-established.

Ken McKenzie, a member of the Bank of Montreal, was elected president of the Brandon Junior Chamber of Commerce at a recent meeting.

FIFTY YEARS AGO

A group of citizens in Brandon’s north end has joined forces with the Brandon Figure Skating Club in a lobbying effort to have the city build an arena in the north end.

Ronald Reagan won the Indiana presidential primary last night, surging ahead of U.S. President Gerald Ford in their contest for the Republican nomination.

Robin Arthur Giles, a 39-year-old senior lecturer at Queen’s University in Belfast, has been named the new dean of science at Brandon University.

FORTY YEARS AGO

Phil Desjarlais of Rivers defeated five other finalists to win the third Trails West Motor Inn Search for Talent Contest this week. He, along with previous winner Curtis Grambo of Brandon, will compete in the provincial competition in Oak Bluff.

Souris Mayor Doug Blanco has announced he will resign his post to take a new job in Winnipeg with the Manitoba Telephone System.

THIRTY YEARS AGO

A motion urging federal politicians to repeal the section of the Criminal Code that allows first-degree murderers the right to apply for early parole was narrowly defeated by city councillors.

Don Main was recently named Canadian RV Dealer of the Year by the more than 600 members of the Recreation Dealers Association in conjunction with Camping Canada.

TWENTY YEARS AGO

Two veteran Brandon city councillors now face challenges to keep their seats this fall after Stephen Montague, a 25-year-old university student, announced he’ll run in Richmond ward in the coming municipal election. Montague will run against incumbent Margo Campbell. Mayor Dave Burgess will face current Meadows ward Coun. Beth Smale as he seeks re-election. Veteran Green Acres Coun. Don Jessiman faces a challenge from Brandon and District Labour Council president Jan Chaboyer, who declared several months ago.

TEN YEARS AGO

Tales of chaos and compassion are starting to emerge as Fort McMurray, Alta., evacuees describe their harrowing escape from the catastrophic fire. The scene south of the city on Tuesday night saw gridlocked highways, dangerous drivers and stranded motorists as residents fled the area. “I definitely could feel the heat, the smoke was thick everywhere,” said Mike Harms, an electrician from Killarney who works north of Fort McMurray. “A lot of buildings you couldn’t even see … flames were coming down the hills.”

Ivan Provorov of the Brandon Wheat Kings was named the Western Hockey League’s top defenceman on Wednesday as the WHL presented its annual awards in Calgary. He wasn’t the only Wheat King to come home a winner: Tanner Kaspick was the league’s scholastic player of the year. The team’s marketing department was runner-up to the Victoria Royals.
