The first national S.C. Eckhardt-Gramatté Competition for the performance of Canadian music was launched yesterday in Brandon with a reception and dinner gala at Brandon University.
Some 570 customers serviced by the Oak Lake telephone exchange will be provided with local dial service in late 1976, the Manitoba Telephone System stated in a news release today.

The Manitoba government has given a group of farmers a $12,000 grant to help them establish an inland terminal near Roblin. The money will be used for a feasibility study on the $6-million project, which would create 10 full-time jobs.
Surprise snowfalls are crushing spring crocuses across much of the Prairies this week and have delayed seeding in a year when high grain prices have farmers hoping everything goes right.
TWENTY YEARS AGO
For years, Brandon Police Service Const. Dave Somers kept the city safe as he patrolled its streets, kept tabs on suspects in court and proved a good friend to victims of crime. But he says the highlight of his 23-year career, soon to draw to a close, was the last two and a half years he spent as Brandon Crime Stoppers police co-ordinator. “For me, it’s been the ideal thing to finish off my career here,” said Somers, who retires from the force next month.
TEN YEARS AGO
More than 160 physicians from across the province converged on Brandon for Doctors Manitoba’s 108th annual general meeting and awards dinner Friday night. During the event, which was held at the Victoria Inn, Brandon’s own Dr. Barb Kelleher was sworn in as the board’s new president for a one-year-term.
Paul Martin, the 21st prime minister of Canada, will be presented with an honorary doctorate from Brandon University during the school’s upcoming spring convocation. Martin, who served as prime minister from 2003-06, will be given an honorary doctor of laws degree at BU’s morning convocation ceremony on May 27.
