SEVENTY YEARS AGO

As the second high water crest of the Assiniboine River runoff passed through Brandon yesterday, the level at the city pumping station rose six inches to a new 1956 record of 1,177.89 feet above sea level.

SIXTY YEARS AGO

Mrs. Thomas Davies, a Brandon mother, and her two-year-old son are in hospital here today after a fire and explosion gutted their four-room home at 119 10th St. North. The fire was believed started by a faulty flow control valve on the oil space heater in the living room.

Patricia Hickling of Brandon won The Brandon Sun Rose Bowl, the senior vocal award at the Brandon Festival of Music.

FIFTY YEARS AGO

Hamiota residents find themselves without the services of a drug store today, following a blaze that levelled Denwal Pharmacy Ltd. Town council is hoping that owner Dennis McMahon of Winnipeg will rebuild the store.

FORTY YEARS AGO

Months of waiting and mountains of market surveys paid off for Brandon’s Western Manitoba Broadcaster Ltd. yesterday when it got the go-ahead to broadcast on the last available VHF television channel in Manitoba, Channel 13.

THIRTY YEARS AGO

Brandon lawyer Randal Smith is one of 29 lawyers and judges taking to the stage in Winnipeg this weekend in a courtroom drama to support the Manitoba Theatre Centre. The Manitoba Bar Association will perform Herman Wouk’s “The Caine Mutiny Court Martial” over three nights at MTC’s Warehouse Theatre as a fundraiser for the province’s premier theatre.

TWENTY YEARS AGO

Surrounded by supporters and with a Métis flag in hand, the man at the centre of a historic hunting rights trial smiled as he arrived at court yesterday. William Neal Goodon, 37, pleaded not guilty to illegally possessing captured or killed wildlife under the province’s Wildlife Act. “Not guilty, because of my Métis rights,” Goodon said. About 40 Métis marched with Goodon to the courthouse on 11th Street from the Southwest Regional Métis Centre on Sixth Street.

The Brandon Wheat Kings arrived in the Seattle area on Sunday afOVERSET FOLLOWS:ternoon with their intended destination as league champions still in the distance. But with a pair of 3-2 overtime victories over the Seattle Thunderbirds, the Wheat Kings are halfway to where they want to be. Jayce Hawryluk scored six minutes and 56 seconds into the extra frame on Saturday in Game 2 to stake his team to a 2-0 lead in the best-of-seven Western Hockey League final at Westman Place.

Four pickup trucks, three enclosed trailers and one flatbed truck departed from Brandon Sunday morning loaded with donations for Fort McMurray evacuees. The special convoy en route to Edmonton, was the result of an eight-hour rally held by community members on Saturday in a parking lot on the corner of 34th Street and Victoria Avenue. At the end of the day, organizer Sarah-Jane Speers says roughly 8,000 pounds of bottled water and more than $4,500 was raised for the relief effort.
