A defence application for separate trials for three Quebec youths charged with murder in the Jan. 9 death of Roman Catholic priest Father Alfred Quirton was denied.

SIXTY YEARS AGO

The 1967 Centennial of Confederation will be marked by the minting of the first gold coins by Canada since 1914 as keepsakes. Finance Minister Walter Gordon announced $20 gold pieces, with the Queen’s effigy on one side and the coat of arms on the reverse, will be turned out by the Royal Canadian Mint in special coin sets.

FIFTY YEARS AGO

Thirteen directors were elected to the board of the Provincial Exhibition of Manitoba. Elected to three-year terms from the Brandon area are: Garry Brown, Gordon Brown, Cam Drysdale, Jim Ferguson, Lefty Hendrickson, Hugh Jameson, Steve Kovach, Gordon McRae, George Vercaigne and Ewart Abey. Other directors from outside of Brandon are Percy Chegwin, Kemnay; Gordon Church, Killarney; and Donn Mitchell, Douglas.

FORTY YEARS AGO

Team Manitoba, the provincial team that came home from the Canada Summer Games with a silver medal, was named team of the year at the Manitoba Baseball Association’s annual meeting held recently.

A man who said he was armed with a gun robbed the Westoba Credit Union at the corner of First Street and McTavish Avenue.

TWENTY YEARS AGO

The list of specialists in Brandon’s medical community continues to shrink as the last child psychiatrist packs her bags to head east, reportedly in part because she felt overworked. Today is Dr. Anelia Raviele’s last day of work. She was the area’s only child psychiatrist after Dr. Lorne Brandt quit during the summer to relocate to British Columbia.

About 20 families of firefighters should now be able to apply for compensation under provincial regulations that came into effect yesterday extending coverage of injuries to firefighters not previously covered. The announcement by Labour Minister Nancy Allan and Russ Morrow, president of the Manitoba Professional Fire Fighters Association, provided detailed regulations to the legislation that was passed in June.

TEN YEARS AGO

After nearly half a century in downtown Brandon, the Western Medical Clinic is moving to a brand-new complex in the city’s west end. The clinic will relocate from 144 Sixth St. this weekend, and is set to open the doors of its new location at 2425 Victoria Ave at 8 a.m. on Monday.

The new kindergarten classrooms at George Fitton School are bright and airy with plenty of room for educational activities — aside from the hardwood floors, it’s hard to imagine the space was once the elementary school’s gymnasium. On Friday morning, Education and Advanced Learning Minister James Allum was at George Fitton to check out the two classrooms, which have been operational since September, and promote the province’s smaller class-size initiative.

John Quenneville scored on a breakaway goal three minutes 42 seconds into overtime on Friday as the Brandon Wheat Kings beat the Kootenay Ice 3-2 at Western Financial Place in Cranbrook, B.C.
