SIXTY YEARS AGO

Striking oil workers in Brandon began their second month off the job, with apparently no hope of returning to work in the near future.

FIFTY YEARS AGO

Sixteen Brandon letter carriers — out of work since Oct. 24 because of the strike of the inside workers at the post office — started their own mail delivery service today, promising same-day or 24-hour delivery within the city at rates comparable to normal postage.

FORTY YEARS AGO

About 29,000 chickens near Steinbach have been killed in what is described as the largest outbreak in Manitoba of laryngotracheitis, an infectious respiratory disease that attacks the birds.

THIRTY YEARS AGO

The local economic development board has taken the first step toward establishment of a strawboard plant in the southwestern corner of the province. A consulting firm has been hired to survey farmers to determine whether the amount of straw produced in the Melita region is adequate.

TWENTY YEARS AGO

Someone else will lead Manitoba’s Progressive Conservatives into the next election after Stuart Murray announced yesterday he will step down as party leader. Despite receiving a number of calls from supporters to stay on the job, Murray decided after a lot of soul-searching and discussion with his family not to re-apply for his own job.

Brad Partridge is lucky to be alive after a semi-trailer slid right over top of him on the snowy Trans-Canada Highway yesterday. Partridge was waiting by the side of the highway for a tow truck to pull his car out of the ditch, about 13 kilometres east of Brandon. A woman saw him and pulled over to offer her help. Partridge walked over to her car, said he’d be fine and headed back to his vehicle. “As I was going back to my car, my head was down, and all of a sudden the back end of the car came up and hit me,” he said. “And before I even knew it, I saw a semi-trailer coming over my head.” The semi had also lost control on a slippery section of the highway, and skidded sideways into Partridge’s car. He had only a split second to bend his body backwards and duck under the trailer as it careened over him.

TEN YEARS AGO

The Ashley Neufeld Softball Complex committee is hoping a final fundraising push will result in a home run for the project. Gord and Diane Peters of Cando Rail Services have put a challenge out to the community: all donations raised by Dec. 31 will be matched by the company.

Justin Trudeau has instructed Justice Minister Jody Wilson-Raybould to review federal court cases and end any appeals or positions that run contrary to the Charter of Rights and Freedoms, Liberal commitments or values. That direction is among the formal guidance the new Liberal prime minister spelled out in detailed mandate letters to the 30 members of his cabinet.
