SIXTY YEARS AGO
A single snip of the scissors by Premier Duff Roblin launched a unique multimillion-dollar venture in western Canadian agriculture, as Pool Packers was officially opened. George Kozak is the manager of the new Brandon Pool Packers Ltd. The $3-million plant is the first farmer-owned co-operative packing plant in Western Canada. It is located just outside Brandon in the Municipality of Cornwallis. It is a subsidiary of Manitoba Pool Elevators.
FIFTY YEARS AGO
A 50-year-old tradition was broken recently when Manitoba’s livestock contingent to the Toronto Agricultural Winter Fair travelled to their destination by truck rather than rail. Eight large semi-trailer livestock vans hauled 254 head of cattle, horses and swine to the classic agricultural event.
FORTY YEARS AGO
Residents of south-central Manitoba were still digging out today from a blizzard that dumped 23 centimetres of snow over much of the region.
Brandon’s apartment vacancy rate from October stands at 0.9 per cent, up slightly from April’s figure of 0.6 per cent.

A kickoff to Addictions Awareness Week at city hall was enough to bring together — holding hands yet — Health Minister Jim McCrae, Brandon East NDP MLA Len Evans and Mayor Rick Borotsik.
Russian Olympic skating star Sergei Grinkov, who skated with his wife Ekaterina Gordeeva in the pairs events, collapsed and died of an apparent heart attack in Lake Placid, N.Y., while the pair was practising for an ice show.
TWENTY YEARS AGO
Warm weather welcomed thousands of spectators who lined downtown streets yesterday to take in the Santa Claus Parade. About 2,000 people packed the sidewalks along Rosser and Princess avenues, many just wearing light jackets in the above-zero temperatures.
TEN YEARS AGO
Brandon product Dan Halldorson, who grew on the golf courses of Manitoba and wound up winning on the PGA Tour, has died after suffering a stroke Monday, the Canadian Golf Hall of Fame confirmed Thursday. Halldorson, a giant in Canadian golf and a member of the Hall of Fame, was 63. He died Wednesday night in Illinois, where he had lived for many years.
The city is grappling with the pricey decision of what to do with Brandon’s deteriorating Eighth Street bridge. Four options for the bridge’s future were laid out Thursday night, along with the estimated price tags — ranging from $1.325 million for rehabilitation to $35 million for demolition and replacement. Just demolishing the bridge is expected to cost $2.3 million, and would take up to two years to complete.
