Brandon residents got their first real look at the 1965 election race in the Brandon-Souris constituency as all four parties contesting this riding brought their candidates out for the general public in the city to see. In attendance were candidates Harry George (Liberal), Walter Dinsdale (Conservative), Al Bassingthwaighte (Social Credit) and Harold Weitman (NDP).

FIFTY YEARS AGO

Brandon letter carriers have been told to stay at home because there is no work for them. After Nov. 7, they will be able to draw unemployment insurance if the inside postal strike lasts that long.

Keystone Centre directors added another structural problem to their growing list when they were told that trusses supporting the roof in the centre’s main arena area corroded.

FORTY YEARS AGO

Ten or 15 years ago, it was an unspoken taboo for women to exhibit cattle at a major show like the Manitoba Ag Ex. Times have changed though, and there are now a growing number of women making the mark in the cattle industry.

After 25 years of collecting student contributions, Brandon University students finally have enough money to start construction of their own gathering place. Construction of the $1.25-million Knowles-Douglas Centre, named in honour of BU Chancellor Stanley Knowles and former NDP leader Tommy Douglas, should begin shortly.

THIRTY YEARS AGO

Blowing winds and icy roads helped to keep attendance down on the opening day of the Fall Fair ’95. A handful of exhibitors were also prevented from attending, as were guest speaker University of Manitoba agricultural economist Daryl Kraft, who couldn’t make the trip from Winnipeg, and backup speaker Manitoba Agriculture Minister Harry Enns, who couldn’t make it out of the ditch.

TWENTY YEARS AGO

Enrolment is down, costs are up and property taxes will have to rise, Brandon School Division officials said last night. “In order to just maintain the status quo … we’re looking at major tax increases,” school trustee Heather Boles told the crowd at a public meeting. About 200 people showed up at Earl Oxford School to voice their opinions on what the priorities for the 2006-07 fiscal year should be.

TEN YEARS AGO

Four people were killed in a head-on collision near Neepawa early Monday morning. The crash occurred shortly after midnight on Highway 5, about four kilometres north of Highway 16 in the RM of Rosedale. RCMP report it appears a van was travelling southbound and collided with a northbound SUV. The van’s driver, a 68-year-old woman, and a 70-year-old male passenger died at the scene. Both are from the Glenella-Lansdowne area. The driver of the SUV, a 19-year-old man, along with a 20-year-old female passenger, both from Ebb and Flow First Nation, were also pronounced dead at the scene.

A Brandon judge has joined a Winnipeg colleague in challenging the need for judges to view child porn during sentencing. Judge John Combs says he has presided over enough child porn cases — a description is enough; there’s no need for him to see it.
