Looking Back

SIXTY YEARS AGO

The mercury soared to 72 F on Nov. 2, the highest reading ever recorded here for the month. At the other end of the scale, the lowest recording in November was -14 F on the 29th. A year ago, the low was -26 F, also on the 29th, while the high was 58 F on the fifth.

His hands burned and his coveralls aflame, George Vercaigne managed to escape from the feed room of his Shilo hog ranch barn. Between 800 and 900 weaning pigs and 200 market hogs were destroyed.

FIFTY YEARS AGO

Walter Weir, former Conservative premier of Manitoba, is returning to Manitoba at the end of the year to start his own business, which will be called Walter C. Weir Financial Planning and Insurance.

Const. Lorne Gregorash can now be found driving around the city in a new Bobcat which has a police hat on the roof and large decals on the side. The letters CAP on the hat stand for citizens alert program.

FORTY YEARS AGO

A local group will hold an official opening for an already-full $2.4 million housing complex for senior citizens. The Independent Order of Odd Fellows, Brandon City Lodge No. 6, has set today for the ceremonial opening of their Oddfellows Corner at 939 Ninth St. The date is significant for the lodge as members first met in the city on Dec. 1, 1882.

Manitoba deputy premier Muriel Smith and three government employees escaped injury when the twin-engine propeller plane in which they were travelling crash-landed in a farmer’s field near Roblin.

THIRTY YEARS AGO

Canadians will work longer to qualify for smaller benefits for a shorter period of time under a radical overhaul of their unemployment insurance system. The changes will take $2 billion out of a $10-billion system — a 20 per cent reduction.

Several early snowfalls have sent the city’s winter street clearing operation costs over budget. The department had budgeted $417,000 for snow removal, plowing, sanding and salting city streets for 1995. But it is now approximately $70,000 in the red.

TWENTY YEARS AGO

The Brandon Sun embarks on some bold new changes that will provide readers and advertisers with even better information and service. The biggest change will occur on Jan. 5, when a new twice-weekly publication will be delivered to some 37,000 homes in western Manitoba. The region-wide Community News Edition will be the third section of the regular Brandon Sun on Thursdays and the second section on Sundays.

The new Safeway store at the Corral Centre, the company’s first Lifestyle store in Westman, will open its doors at 7 a.m. tomorrow. The first 100 customers in line will receive a free DVD player and 200 more DVD players will be handed out at random throughout the rest of the day.

TEN YEARS AGO

A police officer who was stabbed three times while trying to make an arrest in relation to a suspected arson is expected to be OK, police say. The officer was stabbed during a confrontation at Brandon University Monday evening and two males are in custody, police report. The injured officer was in hospital as of Monday evening but expected to be all right.
