SEVENTY YEARS AGO

Twenty-two drivers of the MacArthur organization chalked up a record of 1.1 million accident-free miles during the last year. Their accomplishment was recognized last night at the company’s annual safety dinner. Representing the group of 22 were Tommy Cowan, Bill Gurba, Hughie Munro, Howard Hart, Orland Potter, Bob Donda and Earl Preston.

SIXTY YEARS AGO

Quick thinking on the part of two 12-year-old babysitters averted possible disaster when a fire broke out in the bedroom of an apartment above the Brandon Tire Shop at Princess Avenue and 13th Street. Cecilia Boreskie and Heather Bruce rescued the two children of Mr. and Mrs. Bruce McKenzie and called the fire department.

FIFTY YEARS AGO

Top beef and pork carcasses went on sale at a luncheon sponsored by the Provincial Exhibition’s Ag Ex ’75 and the chamber of commerce. The champion carcass, a first-entry win for Orley McLauchlin of Harding, tipped the scale at 821 pounds of prime beef. Cargill Grain paid a total of $4.20 a pound for the first side of the steer offered.

FORTY YEARS AGO

Susan Olson and Anne Brolund are currently starring in the Theatre ’85 production of “The Diary of Anne Frank” at the Western Manitoba Centennial Auditorium.

THIRTY YEARS AGO

Rumours of widespread bed closures and massive staff layoffs are rampant at Brandon General Hospital. Hospital executive director Larry Todd said administration was projecting it would have to trim $2 million from the institution’s 1996-97 operating budget and that bed closures would be involved.

TWENTY YEARS AGO

A string of accidents over the weekend has renewed calls to improve the safety of 18th Street North. There were at least three accidents on the north-south route near the Corral Centre on Saturday, and drivers who regularly travel the road say it’s only going to get worse as traffic volumes increase and winter approaches.

TEN YEARS AGO

It’s down to the finishing touches on a major renovation project that will see Brandon’s historic fire hall revamped into Prairie Firehouse restaurant. The local landmark at 637 Princess Ave. has been under construction since the spring, and work is expected to be complete in a matter of weeks.

Speed kills, a fact the Victoria Royals impressed upon the Brandon Wheat Kings in a 4-1 victory at Westman Place on Friday. With the Western Hockey League’s Western Conference leaders making their biennial visit to Westman Place, they scored on a pair of breakaways and a two-on-one as they earned their fifth victory in a row against East Division foes.
