Carrier boys of The Brandon Sun from the city and surrounding district, along with their parents, were guests of honour at a special theatre party held in the Strand Theatre over the Thanksgiving weekend. One Sun paperboy, Eddie Driver, was singled out for special mention when he was declared the best boy of 1955.

Grain producers received a multimillion-dollar shot in the arm today from the Canadian Wheat Board. Initial payments for No. 1 Canada western red spring wheat increases to $3.75 a bushel from $2.50, the price for No. 2 Canada six-row barley to $1.95 from $1.65 and the price for No. 2 Canada western oats to $1.20 from $1.10.

Brandon’s Super 8 Motel is indeed super — and has an award to prove it. The motel was awarded the chain’s community service honour in Calgary recently during a regional conference recognizing its support of community groups and endeavours. “We are proud to be a part of the Super 8 system and strive to go beyond our everyday routines and give back to the community,” owner and general manager Bonnie Owens said.
TEN YEARS AGO
An aging wing of the Brandon Regional Health Centre is set to undergo a major facelift, thanks to community fundraising and financial backing from the provincial government. The hospital’s chief operating officer announced Friday that the 46,500 square feet of renovations will include adding 12 single-occupancy rooms to the acute care unit and a redevelopment of the pediatric unit.
The Manitoba economy posted a net gain of 4,000 new jobs last month, driving down the provincial unemployment rate to the second lowest level in the country, Statistics Canada said Friday. In its September labour force report, the agency said the Manitoba economy added 6,400 new full-time positions during the month, but shed 2,400 part-time jobs, for a net gain of 4,000.
