Brandon ratepayers will vote for or against the city having the powers to establish and operate a municipal bus system.
The Brandon school board continued its attack against speeding in school zones and will appear before the police commission with a six-point recommendation.
SIXTY YEARS AGO
Fire destroyed four buildings on the farm of E. Donn Mitchell, about a mile west of Douglas. In addition to the 60- by 30-foot frame barn, a lean-to granary and a shed, the fire destroyed some 3,600 bushels of seed wheat and about five and a half tons of hay.
FIFTY YEARS AGO
Brandon transit workers plan to stay on the job during the national day of protest against the federal anti-inflation program, despite a rollback of their contract by the anti-inflation board.
The Manitoba Amateur Hockey Association has announced that all referees under its jurisdiction will be required to wear helmets as provided by the rules of the Canadian Amateur Hockey Association.
FORTY YEARS AGO
Dale Hayes has resigned as dean of education at Brandon University, president John Mallea announced. Hayes held the position for eight years.
Railway cars are lined up at a grain elevator in Shoal Lake, awaiting cargo. Persistent rains have left much of the harvest on fields in the area, and farmers say at least two weeks of sunshine are needed before harvesting can proceed.
THIRTY YEARS AGO
Larry Maguire made the ultimate political sacrifice yesterday, giving up his second shot at the federal Tory nomination for what he called the good of the party. In stepping aside, the Elgin-area farmer paves the way for Brandon Mayor Rick Borotsik to be acclaimed as the Progressive Conservative candidate for Brandon-Souris.
Lyleton farmer Andy McMechan was sentenced to 61 more days in jail for failing to turn over a tractor seized by Canada Customs following two illegal border runs with barley last March. Meanwhile, 16 farmers made their first appearance in Brandon provincial court after being charged following two separate Canadian Wheat Board protests last May.
TWENTY YEARS AGO
Assiniboine Community College’s move to the former grounds of the Brandon Mental Health Centre on the city’s North Hill took another step forward last night, as the city and province agreed to formal transfer terms. The provincial government agreed to transfer 115 acres of land at the southeast corner of First Street North and Veterans Way to the City of Brandon. In exchange, the city committed about $2.6 million in infrastructure upgrades.
Brandon resident and giant pumpkin grower Charlie Hope dropped by the Sun yesterday with his entry in last weekend’s Roland Pumpkin Fair Weigh-Off competition. On Saturday, Hope competed against 43 other entrants from all over Manitoba and the United States, and came in 20th at 370 pounds. The winner, Jerald Johnson from Minnesota, grew a 1,003-pound Atlantic Giant.
TEN YEARS AGO
Two Irishmen died on the weekend after their vehicle was involved in a rollover west of Melita. Westman RCMP, along with local fire and paramedic personnel, responded to reports of an overturned vehicle on Provincial Road 445 Saturday at approximately 10:30 a.m. After turning the vehicle onto its wheels, the two unresponsive occupants were extracted and pronounced dead. Irish news outlets have identified the men as Raymond McCann, 42, and Cathal Murphy, 33. They originally lived in County Cork, the southernmost county in Ireland.
