Dr. Stuart Schultz, an alderman of Brandon for the last 14 years, was elected by acclamation as mayor of the city.
Brandon-Souris Conservative MP Walter Dinsdale has been appointed to represent his party at the 10th annual session of the general assembly of the United Nations meeting in New York.

The British American Oil refinery in Brandon was closed today by the company in the face of a strike threat by its 43 employees.
FIFTY YEARS AGO
Dr. Harry H. Ross, a well-known Brandon veterinarian, died at his home south of the city. He operated his business for many years from his office located at 33 10th St.
Maurice Strong, a native of Oak Lake, head of a United Nations secretariat and former head of Canada’s foreign aid agency, is to be named chairman and president of the new national oil company Petro-Canada.
FORTY YEARS AGO
The grand opening of the Keystone Plaza (formerly Double Bar S) takes place this week. Businesses in the plaza at 1320 18th St. include Satellite Reflections, Projection Video, Sears Parcel Pick-up, Brandex Ltd. O/A Craven Hill Data, The Caroline Shoppe and S & B Watch and Clock Repair.

Brandon General Hospital implemented its new short-stay surgical program. Twenty long-term surgical beds on 300 East have been converted into the short-stay unit, which will operate on a Monday to Friday basis. Twenty surgical beds are being retired.

The Brandon Regional Health Authority is losing its third pediatrician in just over a year. The doctor’s departure next month will leave the area with just one pediatrician for more than 31,000 children.
TEN YEARS AGO
Polls be darned, Premier Greg Selinger’s approval ratings were off the charts Friday when he told an exuberant crowd in the University of Manitoba’s engineering atrium that the provincial government will contribute the full request of $150 million to the institution’s $500-million Front and Centre capital campaign. That’s the largest capital grant that Manitoba has ever made to a post-secondary project.
For the second game in a row, Brandon Wheat Kings forward Reid Duke fed hungry Wheat Kings’ fans by scoring the team’s seventh goal as they routed the Kootenay Ice 13-1 at Westman Place on Friday. In a team promotion, fans receive a free breakfast at Smitty’s when the Western Hockey League team scores seven goals. Duke also scored the seventh goal in Tuesday’s 8-3 win over the Vancouver Giants.
