SEVENTY YEARS AGO

M.J. Hatch of Brandon has been appointed manager of the Brandon branch of the Codville Company Ltd. He succeeds W.G. Clark, who has been made general manager of the company in Winnipeg.

SIXTY YEARS AGO

Chrysler of Canada Ltd. announced a price reduction in suggested retail prices for its 1966 model passenger cars. President R.W. Todham said the saving on the Valiant Custom 200, six-cylinder, four-door sedan will be $92. It cost $2,711 in 1965, but the suggested 1966 price is $2,685.

FIFTY YEARS AGO

In an announcement made yesterday, directors of the Canada-wide Science Fair 1976 said the major gathering of young scientists from all provinces of Canada will be centred on Brandon University, with the convention area of the Keystone Centre used to display the projects.

FORTY YEARS AGO

Canada will be screening all blood donations for the AIDS virus as of Nov. 4, about six months after comparable testing began in the U.S.

Tougher pollution standards for new vehicles would save thousands of lives and up to $30 billion in medical bills over the next quarter-century, says a study to be released today.

For the second time in two days, anhydrous ammonia accidentally leaked near Neepawa yesterday, but the spill was small and easily contained. Yesterday’s leak happened at Neepawa-Gladstone Co-operative’s anhydrous ammonia plant after a tank was moved, according to Neepawa fire Chief Yves Guillas.

TEN YEARS AGO

Veterinary hospitals in rural Manitoba are experiencing the same kinds of staffing and recruitment issues that are plaguing their medical counterparts. Earlier this year, the provincial government created a Rural Veterinary Task Force to assess the reality for the 145 vets currently practising in rural Manitoba — a move that has some Westman veterinarians looking forward to improvements in the field.

David Suzuki was in Brandon on Friday night to encourage Westman residents to cast a ballot for Canada’s future come election day. The environmental activist was greeted with a standing ovation from the crowd before diving into a 40-minute address that touched on everything from environmental stewardship to ethical governance to Indigenous rights. Suzuki’s main focus of the evening was on the bleak reality of climate change in Canada, which will melt our polar ice caps and impact most of our industries.

Landon Bow won’t be getting many Christmas cards from the Brandon Wheat Kings, even after they’ve beaten his Swift Current Broncos a couple of times. The 20-year-old Swift Current Broncos goaltender was spectacular again at Westman Place on Friday, stopping 49 shots, but the Wheat Kings won 5-3 with a late empty-netter.
