Westman’s only recycling plant cannot afford to operate much longer and may be forced to close in two months unless there is a change in its financial situation. The Westman Recycling Council gave formal notice to the city on Friday that it might not be able to make its upcoming lease payments, according to general manager David McConkey.

TEN YEARS AGO

A judge has reserved sentencing for one of four men charged in a complicated case of systematic child abuse at a southern Manitoba Old Order Mennonite community. In Minnedosa provincial court on Friday, a 34-year-old man pleaded guilty to six charges of assault with a weapon, plus one charge of common assault. The assaults were committed between January 2008 and October 2013 against four girls and three boys.

The Vincent Massey Vikings didn’t do much wrong as they cruised their way into the Winnipeg High School Football League’s Tier 3 playoff semifinals on Friday. The Vikings offence proved to be unstoppable in the first half of their 54-7 quarter-final win against the Kildonan East Reivers at Massey. They found the end zone on their first six drives before running time off the clock on their final possession to go into the break with a 40-7 advantage.
