Elections for several key municipal posts were assured as candidates filed nomination papers with returning officers across the western part of the province.
Cat and kitten rationing is coming to the Metropolitan Winnipeg community of St. James. From Jan. 1, under a bylaw approved by St. James city council, only two cats per family will be allowed and kittens will have to leave home at six months.
FIFTY YEARS AGO
Well-known Canadian author Margaret Laurence was honoured by the people of Neepawa. Laurence was born and raised in the town, and this was her first visit since 1949.
More than 20,000 curious people flocked to an open house at Montreal’s new Mirabel International Airport to see the Anglo-French Concord supersonic jet in its first visit to Canada.
Neepawa resident Thomas Frederick Crook has been named as justice of the peace in Neepawa by Attorney General Howard Pawley.
FORTY YEARS AGO
Canada Safeway Ltd. has decided to temporarily stop importing products from South Africa.
Rental space is filling up in a new Rosser Avenue mall. Five businesses: Anna Marie’s Hair Studio, Domino’s Pizza, Wheat City Donuts, Metropol Security and Ener-Tec Maintenance have already signed five-year agreements. A deal with Bi-Way has not yet been finalized. A Turbo gas bar will also be built east of the mall on Rosser Avenue.
THIRTY YEARS AGO
An enthusiastic crowd enjoyed the Rankin Family’s use of traditional Gaelic songs, original material and pure Cape Breton fiddle music at the Keystone Centre last night.
About 1,000 people were evacuated from Shoppers Mall Brandon and surrounding businesses today after a tanker truck hauling 19 tonnes of anhydrous ammonia flipped onto its side. The accident occurred when the driver apparently lost control of the truck while attempting to turn south onto 18th Street from Richmond Avenue.
TWENTY YEARS AGO
A 64-year-old snowfall record was shattered yesterday as Jack Frost made his first visit of the season to Westman, wreaking havoc on roads and power lines and stranding some school children. At press time yesterday evening, the Trans-Canada Highway remained open but Highway 10 from Brandon to the United States border was closed.
The town of Souris has a new mayor. Darryl Jackson, a former town councillor, has been acclaimed to the top job in the town southwest of Brandon. He was the only person who submitted his papers after council sought nominations from prospective candidates. Jackson, who officially became mayor at noon yesterday, succeeds longtime mayor Jack Denbow, who died in August at age 51.
TEN YEARS AGO
An unknown group of pro-Canadian Wheat Board producers got their message across after they dumped a load of wheat outside Brandon-Souris Conservative incumbent Larry Maguire’s campaign office on Monday. Two signs stood in the grain, with one reading “Dairy Farmers You’re Next Thanks Harper.” The message comes on the heels of the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP), which will see the government open the Canadian dairy market 3.25 per cent to imports from 11 countries.
Since late July the Toronto Blue Jays have shown they can dominate baseball in the regular season, going 43-18 down the stretch. With the post-season here, it’s on the management and coaching staff to construct a 25-man roster that they hope can win three games out of five in their American League Division Series, then four out of seven the rest of the way.
