SEVENTY YEARS AGO

Showing a net profit of $11,646.28, despite rain that washed out nearly two full days of the weeklong program, the Provincial Exhibition of Manitoba shareholders learned that the year could be regarded as a successful one.

Successful for the third straight year, G.W. Pineo, manager of Chater Poultry Farm, received a cheque and second prize from the Canadian National Exhibition contest. Pineo, who raises Light Sussex poultry, captured first prize in 1954 and has been in the runner-up spot for the past two years.

SIXTY YEARS AGO

Donations to the Brandon and District Community Chest campaign reached $14,716.

FIFTY YEARS AGO

Killarney is going to have a blast. Town council agreed to a blasting method to be used in demolition of the old Killarney and District Hospital and auxiliary buildings. The army will do the work. The levelled property will be then transferred to the Lakeview Senior Citizens Home.

FORTY YEARS AGO

Green Acres School students helped spread about 128 tonnes of washed sand as part of a project organized by parents and the Brandon School Division to spruce up a playground on the school’s property. Parents constructed many of the new pieces of playground equipment.

THIRTY YEARS AGO

Gen. Jean Boyle’s rocky nine months as head of the Canadian Armed Forces ended abruptly, leaving the military in crisis as the government picks through a list of possible replacements.

TWENTY YEARS AGO

Hundreds of people lined the streets of Minnedosa to greet a local hero returning wounded from Afghanistan. Cpl. Scott Collen was seriously injured by a suicide bomber’s blast on Sept. 18 that killed four other Canadian soldiers. After weeks in hospital and several surgeries, the husband and father of three returned to Minnedosa to a hero’s welcome. Dozens of cars lined the highway leading into town and hundreds of people waved Canadian flags and held signs in anticipation of his arrival.

TEN YEARS AGO

The RCMP is investigating two cases of babies who were switched at birth at a northern Manitoba hospital more than 40 years ago. The two cases involve four men, who went home with different parents from the Norway House hospital in 1975. They went public with the mixups in the past year after getting DNA tests. The RCMP say its investigation will be separate from a review the federal government announced in August.

Brandon plays host to the inaugural regional rugby sevens tournament today and tomorrow. It will feature under-15 and U17 girls and boys teams from Westman and Winnipeg as well as a U13 boys division. Teams will play a full round-robin on each day of the competition.
