Reeve D. Birdsell of the Municipality of Cornwallis and Gurney Evans, minister of industry and commerce, attended the ground-breaking ceremonies on the site of the multimillion-dollar J.R. Simplot complex. The plant is scheduled to start production Sept. 1, 1966.
Hurricane Betsy smote New Orleans with possibly its greatest natural disaster, with damage estimated in the millions. Nearly 250,000 people fled Louisiana and Mississippi lowlands for refugee camps. More than 12 hours after Betsy hit, the water in some riverfront areas stood eight feet deep.

Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau brushed off questions about the unconfirmed resignation of Finance Minister John Turner as he went to a cabinet meeting to discuss the subject.

Brandon police said approximately 27 headstones at the Brandon Cemetery were kicked over during the weekend. About half of them were badly damaged.
TWENTY YEARS AGO
Two of New York’s finest were in Brandon yesterday to meet with local firefighters before attending a ceremony at the International Peace Garden today to commemorate the victims of the Sept. 11 attacks. Lieut. Mike Capasso and Battalion Chief Glenn Hawkins of the New York City Fire Department had lunch at Brandon’s No. 1 Firehall and visited with their Brandon counterparts.
Bubba G’s Old South BBQ, which opened its doors last month on 18th Street and Queens Avenue, features southern-style barbecue cooking and is owned by Randy Goodman.
TEN YEARS AGO
A 26-year-old man is dead following a confrontation outside of the Carberry Motor Inn late Wednesday night, according to several sources. The deceased was confirmed as Garnet Baptisté of Ebb and Flow First Nation, according to Bob Martin, who owns a contracting company near Carberry where Baptisté was working.
Mark Sefton will continue on as chair of Brandon School Division’s board of trustees for the 2015-16 school year. Sefton was appointed chairperson for a fourth year at the board meeting on Wednesday.
