SEVENTY YEARS AGO

The school in Wawanesa opened this morning with an additional classroom, full staff of teachers and 143 students enrolled. H.L. Williams is the new principal.

SIXTY YEARS AGO

About 750 students are expected this year at Brandon College. Several faculty changes have taken place and the staff for this term has risen in numbers from 68 last year to 76. Some new teachers are R.W. Brockway, philosophy and religion; John Welsted, geography; Dr. M.V. Naidu, political science; and Neville Robertson.

FIFTY YEARS AGO

Records were broken last night as the local temperature dropped to -3 C. The previous coldest recorded temperature for Sept. 12 was -1 C in 1926.

FORTY YEARS AGO

A typical Brandon University or Assiniboine Community College student can expect to pay between $300 and $400 for one year’s supply of textbooks this year. At BU, a hardcover psychology text sells for $44.95; geography text $40.50; zoology text $52.95; paperback English anthology $29.95.

THIRTY YEARS AGO

There will be a referendum held with the Oct. 25 municipal election asking voters if they are in favour of expanding Sunday shopping. The Freedom to Choose Committee announced it is asking the public to vote for the right to work, do business and to shop.

Veteran city councillor Jim Reid will be running for re-election in the South Centre Ward he has served for the past 12 years.

TWENTY YEARS AGO

The turquoise waters and tranquil nature of Clear Lake will soon be the source of creative inspiration for a new flow of Manitoba artists. A log cabin built for the Royal Canadian Air Force in the 1930s will soon become a temporary getaway for successful applicants, as the province’s second artist-in-residence program.

TEN YEARS AGO

Manitoba Infrastructure and Transportation has reopened a bridge that spans the Assiniboine River on Highway 250 approximately seven kilometres north of the Trans-Canada Highway. The bridge, one of the last remaining steel-truss bridges in the province, had been out of commission since Sept. 1 after being hit by a piece of farm machinery.

If Caiden Daley was hoping to making a good impression on Brandon Wheat Kings management on Friday, consider it mission accomplished. The 15-year-old Winnipeg product had a goal and two assists on Friday at Westman Place as the Wheat Kings opened their Western Hockey League pre-season by beating the Regina Pats 6-2.
