The Manitoba Highways Traffic Board has denied a request by the City of Brandon to reduce the speed limit on 34th Street despite claims that pedestrians are threatened. The speed is currently 60 km/h.

Al Ross and his wife Sally are franchise owners of The Great Canadian Bagel, Brandon’s newest fast-food outlet, which opened today on Victoria Avenue.
TWENTY YEARS AGO
Seven firefighters from Canadian Forces Base/Area Support Unit Shilo will compete in the National FireFit Challenge in Edmonton, Sept. 15-18. They qualified for the competition after taking part in several similar competitions earlier this summer.
City council is considering creating a bylaw to regulate advertising spotlights such as the one on an 18th Street hotel after several councillors received complaints about its intrusiveness. The giant spotlight over the hotel’s front entrance shines high above the city and pans around the night sky. It is visible from miles away.
TEN YEARS AGO
Eight teams of local hockey players will face off on the parking lot lines in front of Shoppers Mall today for Brandon’s first Stick it to Cancer street hockey tournament hosted by the Canadian Cancer Society. The four-on-four fundraising tournament got its start in Portage la Prairie, and after three successful years, organizers have decided to bring the event out west.
Clinging to a one-point lead and facing second-and-11 from their own five-yard line, Neelin Spartans quarterback Dayton Black plowed forward behind his line on successive plays to earn the first down. That allowed him to kill the final minute off the clock and secure an 18-17 victory for the Spartans over the Daniel McIntyre Maroons in their Andy Currie (A) Division season opener.
