The resignation of administrator Charles W. Grierson was received at a Brandon General Hospital board meeting.
Currently playing at the Strand Theatre is the Brandon premiere and winner of five Academy Awards, “The Sound of Music,” starring Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer. Admission is $2 for the evening show and $1.50 for the matinée.
FIFTY YEARS AGO
Manitoba, the last Prairie province where a call can still be made from a pay station for a nickel, is boosting the price. The Manitoba Telephone System says the change to 10 cents from five cents charges at pay stations outside Winnipeg will begin next Monday.
Jean Strath of Souris, a 46-year-old former home economist, last night won the Liberal party nomination for the upcoming Souris-Killarney byelection over Ray Zelowsky, former Boissevain school vice-principal.

City council endorsed a bid yesterday by the Brandon Minor Baseball Association to play host to the World Youth Baseball Championships in 1991.
An experimental drug — AZT, or azidothymidine — that extends the lives and reduces symptoms of some AIDS patients will be made available within weeks to thousands with the incurable disease, U.S. health officials announced.
THIRTY YEARS AGO
The CBC’s blueprint for heading into the next millennium became clearer today; cut costs, cut staff, eliminate American TV programming and open up more slots for commercials. The public broadcaster will chop 2,500 more jobs and $127 million in further spending to cope with government-ordered budget cuts.
Brandon has run out of the familiar 72 phone prefixes. The new prefix in the seven-digit phone number issued to MTS hook-ups is now 571. Brandon has used a 72 number since the mid-1960s.
TWENTY YEARS AGO
Communities in Bloom representatives at the national conference in Brandon were treated to presentations on the city’s Assiniboine River Corridor plan and a tour of the trail systems at the Riverbank Discovery Centre yesterday. “We use Communities in Bloom to engage our volunteers,” Brandon’s director of public works, George Bailey, said at the Riverbank Discovery Centre. “We have 100 volunteers now that plant and maintain the (Eleanor Kidd Gardens).”
Brandon police describe it as a “big break-in” as thieves smashed their way into Kelleher Ford, pilfered thousands of dollars worth of computer equipment and stole a $43,000 2006 Ford Five Hundred car right off the lot.
TEN YEARS AGO
A 21-year-old man accused of firing a shotgun during a dispute at a Brandon home remains in custody following his arrest on Monday evening. His appearance was waived Tuesday morning as his case was adjourned to Thursday. The man was captured Monday evening near Evergreen Boulevard during an arrest that residents in the area said involved officers armed with rifles.
It could have been a bumper crop in portions of Westman, but the rain — as it so often does — had other plans. A dumping of rain and hail in a late August storm, along with intermittent rain since, has dampened expectations of near-record yields this harvest season. But even so, many farmers have pulled solid yields, particularly with their cereal crops.
