SIXTY YEARS AGO

Premier Duff Roblin will not be a candidate in the Nov. 8 federal election, but will throw himself actively into the campaign on behalf of the Progressive Conservative party and leader John Diefenbaker.

A furious wintry storm, termed by the U.S. weather bureau as one of the worst in history for September, dumped 18 inches of snow on Montana and 15 inches on Wyoming and Nebraska. Brandon had two inches of rain.

FIFTY YEARS AGO

Brandon University is again offering a course in journalism, once a week. It will be a six-credit course taught in the first and second term.

Tentative enrolment figures at Brandon University as of Sept. 19 stood at 1,050 full-time students, an increase of 99 over the enrolment of Oct. 1, 1974.

Sara Moore, a one-time FBI informer linked with various radical groups, was charged with shooting at U.S. President Gerald Ford outside a hotel today.

FORTY YEARS AGO

Flanked by huge banners reading “Keep America Growing,” Willie Nelson opened the marathon Farm Aid concert in Illinois to raise money for the nation’s struggling farmers.

The provincial government has given the green light to a unique experiment in education that will combine David Livingstone School with a seniors housing complex. Plans and drawings will be unveiled next week.

THIRTY YEARS AGO

Soaring transportation rates have forced the Minnedosa alfalfa-processing mill, Tripleleaf, to close.

Chancellor Place at 343 18th St. had its grand opening. Dr. James Bonar and Dr. Alex Pappas opened their new professional building, which includes Chancellor Dental Group and another 2,000-square-foot area still available for rent.

TWENTY YEARS AGO

James Ehnes performed during a concert at the Western Manitoba Centennial Auditorium on Wednesday evening. The Brandon-born violinist, who has performed in 20 countries on more than four continents and won two Juno awards for his recordings, performed in the second of the Dean’s Series for the Brandon University School of Music.

A farm accident left Rick Martin of Reston unable to harvest 320 acres of canola. So friends and family did what any other good farm people would do — they did it for him. Dallas Watt, Todd Sobry, Hal Martin and Corey Martin combined the fields, while Verne Cook, Buck Martin, Brad Martin, Alvin Irwin, Carmen Martin and Keith Jackson hauled grain. Meanwhile, Donna Cook, Sandra Zarn, Debbie Martin, Lorna Irwin, Tayna Renwick, Gwen Martin, Michelle Martin and Gladys Martin prepared a bountiful supper in the field to feed the hungry worker bees.

TEN YEARS AGO

Brandon First scored another point in its effort to attract major curling events to the Wheat City. City council approved a grant of $300,000 for the tourism organization to use toward hosting fees required for large, prestigious Curling Canada events. “We’re thrilled to see the support coming from mayor and council, obviously, on the strategy that we’ve been following for almost two years now,” said Brandon First executive director Jackie Nichol. “It really gives us the ability to take the next step and be incredibly competitive and really move forward on searching out the next perfect event for Brandon.”
