Brandon University’s board of governors voted unanimously to adopt a policy preventing the university from participating in Star Wars research.
THIRTY YEARS AGO
Four former Brandon Wheat Kings and one of the first Foxwarren phenoms were inducted into the Manitoba Hockey Hall of Fame last night. Former Brandon coach Dunc McCallum, star forwards Ron Chipperfield and Rick Blight, and Bob Chrystal — a member of the 1948-49 Memorial Cup finalists — were honoured along with Ron Low, the current Edmonton Oilers coach. He’s originally from Foxwarren.
TWENTY YEARS AGO
The congregation of the Brandon Hills United Church is a bit closer to rebuilding their chapel after a fundraising auction that included everything from vacuum cleaners to a pre-planned funeral service. The auction was held yesterday at the Brandon Hills school grounds, next to where the historic church stood for 108 years before it burned down in April 2004. How the fire started remains a mystery, but an electrical fault or vandalism are believed to be the most likely causes.
The Manitoba government is in discussions with at least 25 private companies that want to build wind farms in the province. En route to developing a long-term wind energy strategy for Manitoba, the provincial government and Manitoba Hydro will issue a request for proposals later this fall.
TEN YEARS AGO
Brandonites are being asked to “give life” by donating blood in order to return the country’s supply to an optimal level. Canadian Blood Services’ blood supply has declined due to a slow summer donation period. The organization needs to collect 16,000 units of blood each week in order to maintain the country’s supply for use in various surgical procedures and cancer treatments. An “ideal” amount of blood inventory is between 20,000 to 30,000 units.
T.L. Penner Construction has been awarded the contract for Brandon’s airport expansion project at a cost of $7.4 million. The major redevelopment is a joint initiative of the city, province and federal government, which is slated for completion in December 2016.
