Major surgery on the Keystone Centre parking lot is underway. The procedure, which will repair and create new paving for parking and add another exit route, is expected to last until freeze-up.

TWENTY YEARS AGO

A Brandon woman will travel to Russia this week with a one-track mind. She wants to attract international traders to Brandon’s agricultural fairs. Provincial Exhibition of Manitoba general manager Karen Oliver will join Manitoba Agriculture Minister Rosann Wowchuk in Moscow, where she will learn about agricultural trading in Russia. Wowchuk will participate in a European trade mission this week to build more markets for Manitoba products.

TEN YEARS AGO

Women and allies met at Princess Park Friday night for the annual Take Back the Night march to end violence against women. This year, the event was organized by the Brandon University Students’ Union along with several community partners, including the Brandon Women’s Resource Centre and the Sexuality Education Resource Centre. Corinne Mason, professor of women and gender studies at Brandon University and faculty adviser for the event, says even though Take Back the Night is an internationally recognized event, little has changed for women since the first march in the 1970s.

In a game of missed connections and lost opportunities, the Brandon Wheat Kings finally ran out of chances and lost 2-1 in a shootout to the visiting Swift Current Broncos. In front of 5,004 people, a dominant yet seemingly nervous Wheat Kings team lost despite firing 54 shots at Swift Current goalie Landon Bow during their Western Hockey League regular-season opener at Westman Place on Friday.
