SIXTY YEARS AGO
Brandon Woolen Mills, killed for several weeks by bankruptcy proceedings, has been purchased by a former Brandon resident and will resume manufacturing next week. The mill has been purchased by Chris Metev, who was associated with the firm for 11 years prior to 1962, when he left for Hamilton and opened a furniture plant.
Prospects for selling colour television sets in Canada appear brighter as increasing use of colour is made by United States channels and is picked up in populous border cities.
FIFTY YEARS AGO
The largest class in the history of the Brandon General Hospital School of Nursing registered yesterday. The 78-member class joins 48 second-year nursing students who have one year left before graduating.

Mayor Ken Burgess says he has received assurances from Transport Minister Don Mazankowski that Brandon airport’s control tower will remain open.
THIRTY YEARS AGO
The Brandon Wheat Kings axed several players from their training camp roster over the long weekend. Cuts included six defencemen — Ken Burgess, Cory Dittmer, Curtis Glennie, Ryan McFayden, John Gunter and Lyndon Thompson — and seven forwards: Troy Stewart, Mark Couvier, Jeff Ebel, Mark Scott, Mike Reimer, Keith Carson and Don Sauter.
TWENTY YEARS AGO
Brandon’s emergency room could face a crisis as the hospital’s chief of emergency medicine threatens to stop doing the extra duty needed to keep it running during a physician shortage, while patients may endure longer wait times this weekend. Dr. Charles Norman said the shortage at the Brandon Regional Health Centre means there may not be enough doctors on duty this long weekend, even though he has given up a day off.
Three more Manitobans have tested positive for West Nile virus. This brings the province’s total number of people to have contracted the virus this summer to 33. This comes after Manitoba Health announced one person living in the province recently died of the virus that is transmitted by the Culex tarsalis mosquito. This was the first West Nile-related death in the province since 2003, when two Manitobans died.
TEN YEARS AGO
Although the federal election is still more than six weeks away, there is some concern about how the new Fair Elections Act will affect voters at the polls. Joni Swidnicki, Elections Canada returning officer for Brandon-Souris, said most voters won’t notice any changes at the polls with the majority of the changes being minor in nature. One of the major differences, however, is that the law now prohibits the use of the voter information card as a document that can be used as proof of residency.
Brandon University is the latest Canadian campus to embrace gender-neutral washrooms for students and faculty. Just in time for the 2015-16 school year, the university has established 14 single-stall, accessible washrooms, in addition to the one already available in the Healthy Living Centre.
