SIXTY YEARS AGO

Dr. Albert Schweitzer, “the great white doctor,” has died at the jungle hospital he founded in Africa more than 50 years ago.

Four inches of snow fell in the Riding Mountain National Park area yesterday. The road through the park was closed at 6 p.m. by RCMP after conditions deteriorated and reopened today after snow plows had been sent into the area.

FIFTY YEARS AGO

Three new members of the Economic Development Advisory Board announced by Industry and Commerce Minister Len Evans are Albert Cerill, CNR employee and representative of the Canadian Brotherhood of Railway Transport and General Workers; William E. Shields, chartered accountant and vice-president of the Clarkson Co. Ltd.; and Isaac Beaulieu, secretary-treasurer of the Manitoba Indian Brotherhood.

The conversion of a number of highway signs to acquaint motorists with the metric system has been announced by Highways Minister Peter Burtniak.

FORTY YEARS AGO

Jeffrey Oliphant, 41, was sworn in today at the city’s second Court of Queens Bench judge by Associate Chief Justice Al Hamilton.

Prime Minister Brian Mulroney and wife Mila welcomed a new son, Nicolas.

THIRTY YEARS AGO

A major RCMP traffic checkpoint on the Trans-Canada Highway near Carberry resulted in 82 charges under the Highway Traffic Act and one arrest.

Throngs of children and parents turned out on Labour Day for the picnic at Curran Park. The outing, in aid of Save The Children Canada, was held with a great deal of organizational help from the City of Brandon, especially park programmer Ramona Kalinchuk.

TWENTY YEARS AGO

Drivers were unimpressed when Brandon gas stations broke the loonie barrier for regular fuel last month, and soon after hit 103.9 cents per litre. But this week’s steep increase to 119.9 cents per litre at most pumps has outraged many drivers in the city.

When 11-year-old Hailey Hooke from Clear Lake goes back to school this week, she’ll be able to say she really did something with her summer vacation. Hailey raised more than $1,000 for breast cancer research by selling handmade bead bracelets. In just the past three weeks, Hailey made more than 200 bracelets and sold them for $5 each from her home and through stores in the Clear Lake area.

TEN YEARS AGO

Conservative Leader Stephen Harper says the image of a dead boy on a Turkish beach is heartbreaking, but it doesn’t change the need to fight the Islamic militants that are the root cause of the suffering in Syria and Iraq. Harper said Thursday he and his wife Laureen saw the tragic photo of three-year-old Alan Kurdi on the Internet and that it evoked images of their own son, Ben, frolicking at that age. But Harper said the problem is bigger than one tragedy, saying he has seen tens of thousands of people affected by the ongoing violence in refugee camps in Iraq and Jordan.
