SIXTY YEARS AGO
The government clamped a one-year freeze on Health Minister MacEachen’s medical care program. Finance Minister Mitchell Sharp says that as an anti-inflammatory measure the government has decided to set back the July 1, 1968, effective date of federal payments to provincial medical care insurance programs.
A flash fire levelled the Basswood General Store and a home and damaged another building in the hamlet of Basswood, 11 miles west of Minnedosa. Store owner John Borschawa estimated damage at about $30,000.
FIFTY YEARS AGO
A trend toward shorter, more styled haircuts for men is revitalizing the barbering business. In fact, business is so good, many Brandon barbers have adopted an appointment-only system to avoid long customer lineups. Prices vary, but in Brandon the cost of a wash and style runs from about $5 to $7. There are still some who will give a traditional haircut for between $1.25 and $3.50, but the trend is toward hair styling.
Manitoba and the three other western provinces have decided to join Ontario in a planned new major lottery. The new lottery is called the Provincial and tickets will sell for $5 each.
FORTY YEARS AGO
Diane Browett and Denise Lussier, employees of the Brandon Fire Department, received special honours from Mayor Ken Burgess and fire Chief Ed Polnick for successfully completing a 12-week course at the recently completed Manitoba Fire College. Only two other women in Canada have completed this level — one from Toronto and the other from Ottawa.
THIRTY YEARS AGO
As many as 1,400 jobs may be eliminated in the CBC’s English-language radio and television by next spring, the Globe and Mail reported today.
A Brandon lawyer has been named president of the Federation of Law Societies of Canada. Donald Little, past-president of the Law Society of Manitoba, was elected to the post last month at the federation’s annual meeting.
TWENTY YEARS AGO
Westman farmers, armed with 12 combines and plenty of loading trucks, took only an hour and a half to combine 140 acres of wheat east of Rivers yesterday afternoon as part of the Rivers and Oak River-area Foodgrains Bank grow project, Acres of Hope. Proceeds from the harvested wheat will go to the Canadian Foodgrains Bank, a Christian-based organization that facilitates the collection and distribution of grain and other agricultural commodities to the world’s hungry people.
Thirty Melita Health Centre patients will spend at least the next few days in hospitals in neighbouring communities after a fire broke out yesterday morning. Shortly after 7:30 a.m., a blaze was discovered in the facility’s main electrical panel, according to Assiniboine Regional Health Authority CEO Penny Gilson.
TEN YEARS AGO
Down 15 points midway through the fourth quarter, the Crocus Plainsmen clawed their way back and in the dying seconds had one more chance to extend Thursday’s Winnipeg High School Football League Kas Vidruk (AA) Division contest. But from the five-yard line, Sam Esler’s throw for Dakota Richard fell incomplete in the end zone and the defending Tier 3 champion Vincent Massey Vikings escaped with a 36-28 season-opening road win.
A Winnipeg man accused of sending letter bombs in the mail, including one that cost a lawyer her hand, is still trying to get a new defence lawyer. Guido Amsel, who faces five counts of attempted murder, fired his lawyer last month and appeared briefly in court Thursday with Saheel Zaman.
