Brandon Police and the Office of the Fire Commissioner are investigating a suspicious Saturday morning fire at a duplex in Westaway Bay.
"At about 8:15 this morning (BPS) received numerous 9-1-1 calls of a structure fire…with people possibly inside," said BPS Staff Sgt. Larry Yanick.
When officers arrived on scene smoke and fire were visible.
Firefighters were able to enter the residence and remove a 20-year-old man and a 29-year-old man from inside.
The 20-year-old man was taken to Brandon Regional Health Centre to be treated for burns on his upper body and lower extremities. At 10:30 a.m. the man was transported to the Health Sciences Centre in Winnipeg via STARS Air Ambulance.
Yanick says the man had family in northern Manitoba and his next of kin has been notified.
The 29-year-old man was treated for minor smoke inhalation on the scene and was interviewed by BPS before being released.
The fire was contained to one side of the duplex but 10 people from the adjoining residence were evacuated by a Brandon Transit bus, six of whom were children. According to Yanick all of those evacuated have found somewhere to stay for the time being.
"Our procedures, when we have a fire and people need to be evacuated, we call Brandon Transit and they send a bus whether it’s five people or fifty people," Yanick said.
The investigation is ongoing and the cause is not yet known, but Yanick says the fire appears to be suspicious.
