Blue Jays trade reliever Bruihl to Guardians for cash considerations

The Canadian Press 1 minute read Wednesday, Dec. 17, 2025

TORONTO - The Toronto Blue Jays traded left-hander Justin Bruihl to the Cleveland Guardians in exchange for cash considerations, the team said Wednesday.

Bruihl was designated for assignment by the Blue Jays on Monday after they agreed to terms with fellow reliever Tyler Rogers on a three-year contract worth US$37 million.

Bruihl did not record a decision over 15 appearances with Toronto this past season. He had a 5.27 earned-run average.

Bruihl made one playoff appearance, working one-third of an inning in Toronto's 13-7 win over the New York Yankees in Game 2 of the American League Division Series.

After MVP season in South Korea, Ponce ready for big-league return with Blue Jays

Gregory Strong, The Canadian Press 4 minute read Tuesday, Dec. 16, 2025

TORONTO - When an attempt to find his pitching form in Japan wasn't bearing fruit after a brief stint in the major leagues, Toronto right-hander Cody Ponce tried emulating his brother-in-law's sporting mindset.

It helped lead to a big turnaround on the mound and now a three-year, US$30-million contract with the Blue Jays.

"He helped me bring out my inner child again," Ponce said Tuesday night on a video call. "And that was something that I felt like I was lacking for the two years prior while I was in Japan."

A journeyman career changed dramatically in 2025 as Ponce posted a 17-1 record over 29 starts with the Hanwha Eagles. He also had 252 strikeouts and a 1.89 earned-run average to win the most valuable player award in South Korea's KBO League.

TORONTO - The Toronto Blue Jays have added another arm to their pitching staff after agreeing to terms with workhorse reliever Tyler Rogers.

The deal announced Monday by the Blue Jays is for US$37 million over three years, with an option for the 2029 season.

The 34-year-old right-hander from Denver split the 2025 season between the San Francisco Giants and the New York Mets, combining to post a 1.98 earned-run average over a Major League Baseball-leading 81 appearances.

Rogers leads the majors with 403 appearances and 406.1 relief innings pitched since 2020.

Mets jettison Jeff McNeil in trade to A’s following departures of Alonso, Nimmo and Díaz

Janie Mccauley, The Associated Press 2 minute read Monday, Dec. 22, 2025

The retooling Mets jettisoned another core player Monday, trading second baseman Jeff McNeil to the Athletics for minor league right-hander Yordan Rodriguez in a deal that left pitcher David Peterson as New York's longest-tenured player.

New York will send up to $7.75 million to the A's to offset some of the $17.75 million remaining on McNeil's $50 million, four-year contract.

McNeil follows Pete Alonso, Brandon Nimmo and Edwin Díaz in leaving the underperforming Mets, who failed to reach the playoffs this year despite the second-highest payroll in the majors behind the World Series champion Los Angeles Dodgers.

McNeil, who turns 34 in April, was selected by New York in the 12th round of the 2013 amateur draft from Long Beach State and had spent his entire professional career with the organization. He made his Mets debut in 2018 and won the big league batting title with a .326 average in 2022, when he was picked for his second NL All-Star team.

The Associated Press 1 minute read Monday, Dec. 22, 2025

BOSTON (AP) — The Boston Red Sox acquired three-time All-Star Willson Contreras from the St. Louis Cardinals on Monday in a trade for right-hander Hunter Dobbins and two pitching prospects.

The 33-year-old Contreras is a .258 hitter with 172 homers and 548 RBIs in 10 seasons with the Cubs and Cardinals. He spent most of his career as a catcher before moving to first base last year, when he batted .257 with 20 homers and 80 RBIs.

Dobbins, 26, went 4-1 with a 4.13 ERA as a rookie in Boston last year before tearing the ACL in his right knee and missing the second half of the season. The Cardinals will also receive Single-A righties Blake Aita and Yhoiker Fajardo.

St. Louis also sent cash to Boston as part of the deal.

Toronto reliever Tyler Rogers says Blue Jays were aggressive in free agency

Gregory Strong, The Canadian Press 3 minute read Friday, Dec. 19, 2025

TORONTO - For the first time in his career, Toronto reliever Tyler Rogers felt like he was being recruited in the off-season.

The Blue Jays were interested right from the start of free agency, he said, with the two sides eventually agreeing to a three-year deal worth US$37 million.

"It leaves an impression when it's the first team that contacts you," Rogers said Friday on a conference call. "No matter who it is. So that started it for me and they seemed more aggressive than anybody."

The submarine pitcher is coming off the best season of his seven-year career. He'll most likely serve in a setup role for the American League champions.

BALTIMORE (AP) — The Baltimore Orioles agreed to a $155 million, five-year deal with slugger Pete Alonso, a person with knowledge of the agreement told The Associated Press on Wednesday.

The person spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity because the deal was pending a physical.

It's a major move for a Baltimore team that vowed to be aggressive following a last-place finish in the AL East. Alonso hit .272 with 38 home runs and 126 RBIs for the New York Mets, posting an .871 OPS that was his highest since he hit 53 home runs as a rookie in 2019.

Alonso, a first baseman who turned 31 on Sunday, hit 264 homers over seven seasons with the Mets. He's earned All-Star honors five times, including each of the past four years.

Another national event is returning to Ashley Neufeld Softball Complex in 2027, with Softball Canada announcing that Brandon won the right to host the under-17 women’s championship.

The complex hosted the U15 national championship in 2023, and the inaugural U13 western Canadian boys and girls championship in 2024. Since officially opening in 2017, it’s also held a multitude of provincial events and the growing Wheat City Classic tournament each summer.

Bruce Luebke submitted the bid on Oct. 15, noting he applied for either the U15 or U17 girls event. Once a first bid is received by Softball Canada, any competing bids have 30 days to submit.

“It was always our intent to put in for 2027 after we were unsuccessful in 2026,” said Luebke, who added this year’s bid was essentially just fine-tuning some of the details on last year’s attempt. “We just felt like after 2023, we were a prime candidate to host another one. We’re pretty happy we’re going to get that opportunity.”

Dylan Cease impressed by Blue Jays’ recruiting pitch as much as his own tosses

Ronald Blum, The Associated Press 4 minute read Tuesday, Dec. 9, 2025

ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) — Toronto's recruiting pitch excited Dylan Cease as much as his own tosses.

“You could tell they built a really impressive culture,” Cease said during a news conference Tuesday, a week after finalizing a $210 million, seven-year contract. “As they were explaining sort of what they do to get the best out of players or how they prepare, and even the little things like travel and whatnot, you can just tell that it’s a buttoned-up organization. They want to win, and it was obvious.”

After coming within two outs of their first World Series title since 1993, the Blue Jays added the right-hander to a rotation projected to include Kevin Gausman, Trey Yesavage, Shane Bieber and José Berríos.

“They’ve proven that they have championship-calibre players and obviously a good process. That was probably the number 1 thing,” Cease said. “And then from there, it was also how would they help me maximize and develop and basically reach my potential more often? That was important to me. That was probably the second-biggest consideration.”

Kiner-Falefa shouldn’t be blamed for short lead in Game 7 of World Series, Schneider says

Ronald Blum, The Associated Press 4 minute read Tuesday, Dec. 9, 2025

ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) — Having watched the play countless times, Toronto Blue Jays manager John Schneider doesn't want Isiah Kiner-Falefa to be criticized for getting thrown out at home plate in Game 7 of the World Series — inches short of scoring a championship-winning run.

“I feel so bad for Izzy for getting all the blame,” Schneider said Tuesday at baseball's winter meetings. “Could we have done a better job of getting Izzy another step or two down? Yeah, for sure.”

After Miguel Rojas hit a tying homer for the Los Angeles Dodgers in the top of the ninth inning, Bo Bichette singled with one out in the bottom half off Blake Snell, and Kiner-Falefa entered as a pinch runner. Addison Barger walked, and Alejandro Kirk was hit by a pitch from Yoshinobu Yamamoto, loading the bases.

Kiner-Falefa took an unusually short 7.8-foot lead at the behest of third base coach Carlos Febles, the fourth-shortest primary lead by a runner off third during the World Series, according to MLB Statcast. Kiner-Falefa's 8.9-foot secondary lead when the pitcher released the ball was the eighth-shortest at third during the Series.

Yankees manager Aaron Boone believes gap with Blue Jays is small

Kristie Ackert, The Associated Press 3 minute read Monday, Dec. 8, 2025

ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) — The New York Yankees spent most of the 2025 season chasing the American League champion Blue Jays. From a summer sweep to a post-season gut punch, Toronto became the measuring stick the Yankees couldn’t clear.

Aaron Boone was asked how his club closes that gap going into 2026.

“Playing better against them is the real simple answer,” the New York manager said Monday at baseball's winter meetings. “They kicked our butt. … That ended up really hurting us.”

Still, Boone pointed out the Yankees had the same regular-season record (94-68) as their AL East rivals.

Zodiacs drop Plainsmen in Early Bird final

By Thomas Friesen 3 minute read Sunday, Dec. 7, 2025

The Crocus Plainsmen had to give away the first-place plaque this year, but still had some valuable takeaways from the Early Bird varsity girls basketball tournament.

They shook the rust off with a decisive quarterfinal win over the Neepawa Tigers, then handled the pressure of a close game, eking out a 46-44 victory over the Souris Sabres.

The Plainsmen then ran into a terrific Garden Valley Zodiacs squad, falling 76-56 in Saturday’s final.

“We learned a lot throughout the weekend,” Hartman said.
