Peters’ single caps 2-run 10th as White Sox beat Blue Jays 5-4 in home opener

Andrew Seligman, The Associated Press 2 minute read Friday, Apr. 3, 2026

CHICAGO (AP) — Tristan Peters capped a two-run 10th inning with an RBI single and the Chicago White Sox beat the Toronto Blue Jays 5-4 in a wild home opener on Friday.

Toronto’s Andrés Giménez tied at 3 in the eighth with a two-run homer against Jordan Leasure. The Blue Jays went ahead with two outs in the 10th when Miguel Vargas’ throw to first on George Springer’s grounder pulled Munetaka Murakami off the bag, allowing Davis Schneider to score from third.

The call was upheld after a review, but the White Sox answered in the bottom half against Jeff Hoffman (1-1).

They had Vargas on third with two outs when catcher Tyler Heineman threw wildly to first on Derek Hill’s bunt single, allowing the tying run to come in. Heineman had just come in after the previous batter, Austin Hays, fouled a pitch off Alejandro Kirk’s left thumb. Kirk, a two-time All-Star, was going for X-rays after the game.

Jack Hughes and Aerin Frankel take the Olympic gold medal tour to Yankee Stadium

Stephen Whyno, The Associated Press 5 minute read Friday, Apr. 3, 2026

NEW YORK (AP) — Jack Hughes held the ball in his hands, occasionally tossing his latest souvenir in the air.

Hughes had done “Saturday Night Live” and cherished the chance to chat with Lorne Michaels, then appeared on “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon” as part of the victory lap for the U.S. Olympic gold medal-winning men’s and women’s hockey teams. It only got better Friday when Hughes and women's goaltender Aerin Frankel threw out ceremonial first pitches at Yankee Stadium before the New York Yankees' home opener against the Miami Marlins.

“I knew a lot of things were coming, but this was the one thing I was always like wishing-slash-hoping for,” Hughes said. "Just so much fun. For both of us, it’s unreal."

Hughes scored in overtime in the men's final at the Milan Cortina Games, a few days after Frankel backstopped the women's team to also beating Canada for gold. It's the first time the U.S. has won double gold in the sport at the Olympics, and the sled hockey team made it a clean sweep at the Paralympics.

Kevin Gausman unbothered, thriving as Blue Jays ace despite two no decisions

John Chidley-Hill, The Canadian Press 3 minute read Wednesday, Apr. 1, 2026

TORONTO - If you look up "unbothered" in the dictionary, there's likely a photo of Kevin Gausman.

Gausman turned in another gem for the Blue Jays but earned a second consecutive no decision to start the season as Toronto fell to the Colorado Rockies 2-1 in 10 innings on Wednesday. Gausman struck out 10, allowed just two hits and issued no walks over six innings.

"Not too much you can kind of dwell on right now," said Gausman. "My job when I pitch is to win the game, and when we don't, whatever happens, I'm not going to be satisfied."

Gausman is the first Major League Baseball pitcher to have 10 or more strikeouts and no walks in his first two games of the season since at least 1900. His 21 strikeouts in his first two starts of the year are also the most by a Blue Jays pitcher in the team's 50-year history.

Jesus Sanchez off to career-best start early in Toronto Blue Jays season

John Chidley-Hill, The Canadian Press 3 minute read Wednesday, Apr. 1, 2026

TORONTO - Jesus Sanchez has brought a simple approach to his first four regular-season games with the Toronto Blue Jays: hit it up the middle.

Sanchez went 2-for-4 at the plate, driving in the first run of the game, as the Toronto Blue Jays topped the Colorado Rockies 5-1 on Tuesday. That performance improved the outfielder's batting average to .462 with a 1.255 on-base plus slugging percentage.

"I'm enjoying this moment, I'm having fun, but I want to talk about approach, especially for the year," said Sanchez through translator Hector Lebron. "I came in here with the mentality to stay through the middle, gap to gap, all the time.

"That's the approach I'm going to continue to do through the season and hopefully it works out for me and for the team."

TORONTO - Cody Ponce's first start for the Toronto Blue Jays was supposed to be a personal victory after playing in Asia for five years.

Instead, Ponce was carted off the field, covering his face with his arm, overcome with emotion and pain after his right knee buckled fielding a ground ball.

"He's getting an MRI right now. We'll see," said Blue Jays manager John Schneider on Monday night. "He felt it hyperextend a little bit, that's what he told me on the field.

"But we've got to wait for the MRI results and we're hoping for the best."

TORONTO - Toronto manager John Schneider gave Jesus Sanchez a shot at the No. 2 spot in the batting order for his first start as a Blue Jay on Sunday afternoon.

The recently acquired outfielder took advantage of the opportunity with a two-run homer to help power Toronto to a 5-2 victory over the Athletics (0-3) to complete a three-game sweep.

"I liked the matchup for him today against the starter (Luis Morales)," Schneider said. "So I wanted to have him get as many at-bats against the starter as possible. And I just love the work he's been doing."

Sanchez turned on a 3-0 offering and blasted it 417 feet to straightaway centre field. It had an exit velocity of 109.2 m.p.h., the fourth hardest-hit ball of the game.
