Trey Yesavage outduels Cam Schlittler in marquee matchup as Blue Jays top Yankees 2-1

Jerry Beach, The Associated Press 3 minute read Yesterday at 11:45 PM CDT

NEW YORK (AP) — Trey Yesavage outpitched Cam Schlittler in a marquee matchup between young aces, and the Toronto Blue Jays edged the New York Yankees 2-1 on Wednesday night.

Following a rain delay that lasted more than two hours, the right-handers traded zeros until the seventh inning — when Toronto loaded the bases with nobody out on an infield single, a walk and a bunt single.

Andrés Giménez then fouled off seven pitches, five with two strikes, before drawing an 11-pitch walk that scored Ernie Clement and chased Schlittler. One out later, Vladimir Guerrero Jr. lofted a sacrifice fly against Jake Bird to make it 2-0.

Yesavage (2-1) allowed just two hits and walked none while striking out eight over six shutout innings. The 22-year-old, who retained his rookie status after throwing 14 regular-season innings last year, has a 1.07 ERA in five starts after missing the first month this season due to a right shoulder impingement.

Vikings defend city softball title

By Thomas Friesen 3 minute read Tuesday, May. 19, 2026

When Kasia Baranyk was halfway to a cycle in the first inning, she liked her team’s chances.

The leadoff hitter scored twice in a huge opening frame, propelling the Vincent Massey Vikings to a 16-5 win over the Neelin Spartans in the Brandon High School Softball League final at Ashley Neufeld Softball Complex on Tuesday.

The speedy sophomore can’t recall batting twice in an inning, let alone scoring a pair.

“Never, it was a great feeling,” Baranyk said. “The girls were buzzing today, good vibes and good at bats.

Massey comeback earns city baseball title

Massimo De Luca-Taronno 6 minute read Monday, May. 18, 2026

The Vincent Massey Vikings chalked up five runs in the fourth inning to overcome a 3-0 deficit and make off with 16-5 victory over the Neelin Spartans in the high school city baseball championships at Andrews Field on Saturday.

“It’s a great feeling,” said Massey pitcher Madden Cheung. “It was a close game until about the fourth inning, but we battled hard and it was a fun game to play.”

Cheung and the Vikings were the only club to go 2-0 in the Zone 15 final, which featured a round-robin style with all three city high schools playing against each other once. They began their quest for the city title with a morning meeting against the Crocus Plainsmen, who they were able to take down 16-0, but not before a flurry of snow came whirling down at the ball park.

The Spartans and Plainsmen then found themselves in a back-and-fourth contest in a bit friendlier weather during the second game of the day, however, the green sweaters were eventually able to break through with a 9-7 win despite being down a few runs late in the game.

Gausman (3-3) limited the Tigers to four hits without a walk and struck out five. He gave up a season-high seven runs, six earned, and 10 hits in 4 2/3 innings against Tampa Bay on Monday.

In a corresponding move, Toronto placed right-hander Tommy Nance on the 15-day injured list  due to right forearm discomfort.

Macko, 26, has a 4.50 earned-run average with 19 strikeouts in 18 innings for the Buffalo Bisons this season.

Varsho lined a 1-1 pitch from Tigers reliever Tyler Holton (0-2) into center field, allowing Vladimir Guerrero to score.

The Tigers, who were 0 for 7 with runners in scoring position, had a chance to win it in the ninth inning with Riley Greene on third and two outs, but Varland struck out Colt Keith.

ST. LOUIS (AP) — St. Louis Cardinals manager Oliver Marmol believes in the “no shirt, no problem,” mantra.

His club was boosted to a win Friday night by a group of college ball players in the right-field seats who took off and waved their shirts as they sang, chanted and drew others into the fray.

Marmol wants the good times to continue.

“Last night’s atmosphere was electric. Let’s run it back this weekend," Marmol said in a social media post. “I’ll buy tickets for fans who want to sit in the right field Loge and bring the energy.”

Blue Jays pitcher Jose Berrios to undergo elbow surgery

Bob Tripi, The Associated Press 2 minute read Saturday, May. 16, 2026

DETROIT (AP) — The Toronto Blue Jays could be without right-hander José Berríos for the remainder of the season as the veteran pitcher is scheduled to undergo elbow surgery Wednesday.

Blue Jays manager John Schneider said Saturday that Dr. Keith Meister will repair a stress fracture in Berríos’ elbow and also evaluate possible ligament damage during the procedure. The team will not know the full extent of the injury or Berríos’ timetable for recovery until the surgery is completed.

“There may be some ligament stuff going on,” Schneider said.

Berríos, 31, has not pitched in the majors this season after elbow inflammation was first detected during a routine MRI while he was attempting to join Puerto Rico for the World Baseball Classic in spring training. A later examination revealed the stress fracture.

Torkelson’s 2-out single in ninth lifts Tigers to 3-2 victory over Blue Jays

Dana Gauruder, The Associated Press 2 minute read Friday, May. 15, 2026

DETROIT (AP) — Spencer Torkelson drove in the winning run with an RBI single with two outs in the ninth inning and the Detroit Tigers snapped a three-game losing streak by edging the Toronto Blue Jays 3-2 on Friday night.

Matt Vierling reached on a bloop single with one out and stole second after Gage Workman struck out. Jeff Hoffman (2-3) intentionally walked left-handed hitting Zach McKinstry to face the righty Torkelson, who spoiled that strategy with his opposite-field hit.

Riley Greene had an RBI double to extend his hitting streak to 10 games, the longest active run in the majors. He has also reached base safely in a career-high 25 consecutive games.

Dillon Dingler reached base three times and scored a run. Drew Anderson allowed only one hit in four innings of scoreless relief and Kenley Jansen (1-2) pitched the ninth for the victory.

Thomas Friesen 6 minute read Thursday, May. 14, 2026

There’s a chance Danika Nell goes pitch for pitch with softball’s first million-dollar player this weekend.

The Boissevain native and her Boston University Terriers are off to NCAA Division I regionals in Lubbock, Texas — home of NiJaree Canady and the Texas Tech Red Raiders.

Regionals are the softball equivalent of the first weekend of basketball’s March Madness, with the top 16 ranked teams hosting a four-team double-elimination tournament for a spot at Super Regionals the following weekend.

The Terriers open the weekend against No. 6-seed Ole Miss on Friday at 1 p.m. CT.

Blue Jays hope that Varsho’s walk-off grand slam might be the start of something

John Chidley-Hill, The Canadian Press 4 minute read Thursday, May. 14, 2026

TORONTO - There's no denying that walk-off grand slam in extra innings against a division rival is a big deal, but for Daulton Varsho and his Toronto Blue Jays teammates, it means a bit more than statistics and standings.

Varsho cleared the bases in the 10th inning with his fifth home run of the season as Toronto rallied past the Tampa Bay Rays 5-3 on Wednesday.

The victory helped the Blue Jays both avoid a sweep at the hands of the American East leaders and snap a three-game skid.

"It can loosen up the clubhouse a little bit," said Varsho of the intangible impact a walk-off win can have. "Knowing that we needed to just kind of have something like that, to be able to just take a deep breath and relax.

Toronto Blue Jays to use spot starter on Saturday vs. Detroit Tigers

Toronto Blue Jays to use spot starter on Saturday vs. Detroit Tigers

The Canadian Press 2 minute read Wednesday, May. 13, 2026

TORONTO - The Toronto Blue Jays have decided to not start any of their pitchers on short rest to fill a hole in their rotation.

Trey Yesavage will start for the Blue Jays on Friday in Detroit, a spot starter will take on the mound Saturday, and ace Kevin Gausman will finish out the series against Sunday, his scheduled start date.

Because Toronto has Thursday off there was the possibility of moving Gausman up to play on Saturday, with the rest of the Blue Jays' rotation bumping up a day too.

Manager John Schneider says he's not sure who will start on Saturday, but it could be a call up from Triple-A, a free agent signed over the next few days, or even a pitcher yet to be traded for.

Blue Jays rally comes up short vs. Rays a year after Toronto led MLB in comeback wins

John Chidley-Hill, The Canadian Press 3 minute read Wednesday, May. 13, 2026

TORONTO - The Toronto Blue Jays had 49 comeback wins in 2025, the most in all of Major League Baseball. This year, they've been coming up short.

Toronto erased a five-run deficit in the seventh inning but still fell to the Tampa Bay Rays 7-6 in 10 innings on Tuesday after Taylor Walls's base hit scored Cedric Mullins and Jonathan Aranda's sacrifice fly cashed in Walls. Although Vladimir Guerrero Jr. drove in George Springer for the Blue Jays in the bottom of the 10th, it wasn't enough.

Manager John Schneider said the five-run seventh gave him hope that Toronto could regain last year's form or, better yet, not fall behind to begin with.

"It worked out where you've got some guys coming in off the bench and having good at bats, but you want to try to start that way," said Schneider in his post-game news conference. "I've said it before, we're kind of like marathon runners, and you want to turn into some sprinters here and get out to a lead, you know?
