Meadows, Maryland Park face off in cricket

Thomas Friesen 3 minute read Wednesday, Oct. 8, 2025

Prince Patel didn’t realize moving to Brandon from India would mean leaving his favourite sport behind.

“I felt good and excited to come here. I was so excited to make new friends and play cricket,” said Patel, who quickly found out the game wasn’t quite so popular in western Manitoba.

But he wasn’t alone. He soon realized dozens more kids were in a similar position, so they just started playing cricket together wherever they found the space.

He went to Meadows School, where teacher Mona Moria saw the same need for the sport when she moved to Brandon in 2014.

McCreary’s Kohlman reflects on Games experience

Massimo De Luca-Taronno 5 minute read Monday, Aug. 18, 2025

If Karlee Kohlman was told two and a half years ago she would be competing in this year’s Canada Summer Games for lacrosse — a sport she had never played before — she wouldn’t have believed a word of it. And as it turns out, her response is just as skeptical today.

“I still really can’t believe I was there,” Kohlman said on Monday. “I feel like it will kick in soon, but I’m still kind of shocked right now.”

The 15-year-old athlete from McCreary, a small community located 136 kilometres north of Brandon with a population of around 700, is coming off a very successful trip in St. John’s, N.L., after she helped Manitoba’s female lacrosse squad secure a fifth-place finish at the Games last week.

In seven games, Kohlman racked up three assists for Team Toba, including a wonderful setup on captain Jaden Loeppky’s opening goal of the game against Quebec, which decided who ranked fifth and sixth in the country.

Labossiere earns win at Riding Mountain

Perry Bergson 5 minute read Sunday, Aug. 17, 2025

Patrick Labossiere is training to go long in a month, but his short-distance speed was enough to win the Riding Mountain Triathlon’s Olympic distance race on Saturday.

The 37-year-old Winnipeg athlete, who is competing in Ironman Wisconsin next month, finished the 1,500-meter swim, 40-km bike, and 10-km run in two hours, 10 minutes, and 15.9 seconds. That put him nearly six minutes clear of second-place finisher Terron Baker and 66 other male finishers in the men’s event.

“I have been training for long courses all year, so I think my top-end speed is not quite there yet, but I use the local races to practice nutrition and a couple of little tidbits on my bike position,” Labossiere said. “(Saturday), I actually practiced running with a water bottle flask, and it worked out quite well. All the little things actually add up to a good race.”

Athletes training for Ironmans traditionally train in longer, less intense workouts, while shorter distances generally require shorter, more strenuous workouts.

Ducharme makes provincial lacrosse team

Owen Ducharme’s lacrosse dreams are starting to take shape.

Ducharme is big on the sport, a big team guy, and now is getting a big opportunity he plans to make the most out of.

He’s cracked Manitoba’s under-17 provincial field lacrosse team, the outdoor version of the game in which he doesn’t have as much experience, nor at the position he’s been assigned to.

While he’s normally a goalie for his Wranglers U17 box lacrosse team, he’ll be playing defence, also known as d-pole for their longer sticks and the fact they only play in the defensive end.

If you tried to predict the 2025 Crocus Plainsmen athletes of the year this time last year, you’d have faced a no-brainer and a head-scratcher.

Naturally, Rebecca Alebiosu repeated as the female athlete of the year, but not even Seth McAuley thought it possible he’d receive the male honour.

“It’s definitely something I never thought would happen,” McAuley said, proudly holding his plaque on Tuesday.

“Ever since Grade 9, I’ve loved playing sports but it’s never something I expected to actually excel in. Grade 12 was just my year, I guess.

Ryan Thevenot quickly fell in love with lacrosse three years ago and wanted to share that passion with his high school buddies.

The Grade 11 student’s father, Ben, approached Vincent Massey staff a few years back about adding the sport. When they agreed to get it going in 2024, Ryan did some hallway recruiting and managed to put together Massey’s first lacrosse team. Now in their second season, the Vikings are fitting right in with the Manitoba High School Field Lacrosse League’s Division 2.

The Vikings (2-3-0) beat the Shaftesbury Titans (1-2-1) in a 7-6 thriller on Sunday afternoon on home turf, then fell 6-4 to a strong Springfield Sabres squad (6-1-1) a few hours later.

“(Thevenot) was really pushing for guys to come out, and it’s a fun sport,” said Rhett Ryden, a Massey hockey and football player who tried the game for the first time in Grade 11.

Those who miss Matt Henry’s physical style for the Brandon Wheat Kings can catch something almost as aggressive at Westoba Place tonight.

For the fourth straight year, Professional Bull Riders Canada is taking the stage in the Wheat City.

Riders attempt to hang on for eight seconds while bulls essentially seek the opposite outcome. The top-ranked rider in today’s event is Fort St. John, B.C., product Jake Gardner, who competed in Dauphin Thursday evening before hitting Highway 10 to Brandon this morning.

“I’m pretty excited. Rodeo season and bull riding season is getting going pretty busy now and I’ve been riding most of my bulls,” Gardner said.
