Speed skaters glide to podium

Perry Bergson 9 minute read Friday, Mar. 13, 2026

The Westman Speed Skating Club certainly mined its fair share of medals at the recent Manitoba Winter Games in Thompson, and a recent initiative may one day increase that success.

The club’s Brandon contingent brought home 14 medals, with Madelyn Nairn earning six, Zoe Forbes winning five, Hayden Dietrich Pulleyblank taking two and Sophia Forbes receiving one.

Pat Leech is head coach of the local club, but another coach, Jen Forbes, was Team West’s coach at the Winter Games and her husband, Scott Forbes, was team manager.

“Honestly, I was so pleased,” Jen Forbes said. “The kids skated so hard. Getting a medal is always nice, but really, to see them improving after every qualifying race leading up to the Games and even at the Games, as a coach, that’s amazing to see. The medals are just the icing on the cake.

McCorrister enjoys powerlifting journey

When training becomes difficult for Brandon powerlifter Halle McCorrister, she zooms out from the day-to-day work and focuses on the long-term rewards.

“I think of the bigger picture,” McCorrister said.“I think in the end it will be worth it and if I can get through my training, the result will be better than what I’m feeling right now.”

It’s brought her a long way in a short time in the sport of powerlifting. The 18-year-old Brandonite will be attending the 2026 Canada Powerlifting National Championships from March 9 to 14 in St. John’s, N.L.

The first-year student at Brandon University has always been athletic but didn’t really know much about powerlifting until she talked to somebody at the gym about the sport.

As the weight on the bar got heavier for Trinity Nwaozor, there was less of her lifting it.

The 19-year-old powerlifter, who moved from Nigeria to the Bahamas when she was two and relocated again to Brandon when she was 13, will carry a stunning life transformation with her into the Canada Powerlifting National Championships from March 9 to 14 in St. John’s, N.L.

“I really didn’t do any sports before I came into power lifting,” Nwaozor said. “I was pretty chubby kid. When I was 12 years old, I was like over 260 pounds. When I was about 14 I decided to do a really big cut and got down to 170 and then I started to get into the gym and started weightlifting.

“Once I started coming to Peak (Performance), someone told me I should start powerlifting and I thought ‘Sure, why not?’”

Gouldie earning his place among racquetball’s best

Massimo De Luca-Taronno 9 minute read Tuesday, Oct. 28, 2025

If 10-year-old Leyton Gouldie had the chance to meet his current self, it’s hard to say whether he’d be more shocked or proud of where he is today.

Gouldie, 19, has spent nearly the last decade rounding out his racquetball game to not just being in elite form but to being one of the top players in the country. He was recently named to Racquetball Canada’s National Elite Men’s Team, ranked fourth overall out of six athletes representing Canada on the world stage.

That nomination came off an unbelievable week by Gouldie at the International Racquetball Federation Pan American Championships in Guatemala City in April, as he rallied all the way to the boys’ 21U singles final before coming up just short in a tight 11-9, 11-6, 11-8 battle against Chile’s Jaime Nicolas Mansilla Cid.

“It was super cool to break into there and finally kind of be in that top group of players in Canada,” said the Brandonite on Tuesday. “It’s surreal to see all the places that it’s taken me and all the people I’ve met, and it’s just kind of neat to look back on how far I’ve come. I think about if I was like 10-years-old and I saw myself playing now, how I’d think I was a pretty cool guy.”

Kenn Kreutzer isn’t the youngest guy at the Brandon Fitness Combat Academy, but he might be the one who’s gained the most.

The 42-year-old boxer from Oak Lake, who is matching up against Sandeep Singh at the academy’s Fall Brawl boxing event on Saturday, said his upcoming fight has him awfully motivated.

“It’s been pretty good,” Kreutzer said. “I look back now at where I physically was four years ago and even two years really, and I do notice. If I’m not trying for a fight, I find I don’t put in as much effort. When you have something to work towards, for me anyway, I put in a little more effort.”

He tries to train six days a week.

“I saw a lot of people I knew playing other sports and achieving a lot of things in their sports,” Melo said. “I just wanted to achieve something of my own and landed on boxing. I find it really fun.”

Ryker Batson can tell his Fall Brawl boxing event is getting closer from the athletes he works with at the Brandon Fitness Combat Academy.

The facility is playing host to the card on Oct. 25 at 5 p.m., with seven local boxers expected to compete, and other athletes coming from Winnipeg, Saskatchewan and the United States.

“I’m excited,” Batson said. “I’m excited to see all our boxers grow. I know they’re pretty pumped to have an actual date. It seems like we’ve been trying to get a date for a while and now that we actually have one, I can see the joy in their faces now that they know they actually have a fight coming up.”

The event is a first for the Brandon Fitness Combat Academy, which is located at 545 Pacific Ave., and can accommodate about 100 people.

Prince Patel didn’t realize moving to Brandon from India would mean leaving his favourite sport behind.

“I felt good and excited to come here. I was so excited to make new friends and play cricket,” said Patel, who quickly found out the game wasn’t quite so popular in western Manitoba.

But he wasn’t alone. He soon realized dozens more kids were in a similar position, so they just started playing cricket together wherever they found the space.

He went to Meadows School, where teacher Mona Moria saw the same need for the sport when she moved to Brandon in 2014.

McCreary’s Kohlman reflects on Games experience

Massimo De Luca-Taronno 6 minute read Monday, Aug. 18, 2025

If Karlee Kohlman was told two and a half years ago she would be competing in this year’s Canada Summer Games for lacrosse — a sport she had never played before — she wouldn’t have believed a word of it. And as it turns out, her response is just as skeptical today.

“I still really can’t believe I was there,” Kohlman said on Monday. “I feel like it will kick in soon, but I’m still kind of shocked right now.”

The 15-year-old athlete from McCreary, a small community located 136 kilometres north of Brandon with a population of around 700, is coming off a very successful trip in St. John’s, N.L., after she helped Manitoba’s female lacrosse squad secure a fifth-place finish at the Games last week.

In seven games, Kohlman racked up three assists for Team Toba, including a wonderful setup on captain Jaden Loeppky’s opening goal of the game against Quebec, which decided who ranked fifth and sixth in the country.
