WINNIPEG - Willie Jefferson is giving Jake Thomas the stamp of approval in his new role as the Blue Bombers' defensive line coach.

After all, the veteran rush end has already seen Thomas in coaching mode during their six seasons as teammates in Winnipeg, including the 2025 campaign.

“Jake is one of those X's and O's guys, like old school,” Jefferson said from Texas, where he was visiting family when the Bombers made the announcement Monday.

“Pretty much once a week during the season he shows tendencies of being a really good coach, wanting the young guys (in meetings) to get up on the board and draw the plays out. And not just what they have to do, but knowing what everybody on the defensive line has to do.”

WINNIPEG - The Winnipeg Blue Bombers are making adjustments to their coaching staff ahead of the 2026 CFL season.

The Bombers announced Monday that Tommy Condell has been named offensive coordinator, Jake Thomas is the new defensive line coach and Jason Hogan is reprising his role as running backs coach.

The moves come after the team finished the 2025 campaign fourth in the West with a 10-8 record to clinch a crossover playoff spot, then fell to the Montreal Alouettes in the East Division semifinal. It was the first time in five years Winnipeg did not play in the Grey Cup.

Condell spent the last two seasons as offensive coordinator for the Ottawa Redblacks and returns to the Bombers, where was special teams coordinator in 1997 under then-head coach Jeff Reinbold.

VANCOUVER - The B.C. Lions have signed American linebacker Darnell Sankey to a one-year contract, the CFL club announced Friday.

Sankey spent the last three seasons with the Montreal Alouettes, helping them win a Grey Cup in 2023.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The final images of the Kansas City Chiefs' postseason pursuit were Patrick Mahomes getting helped to the locker room with what turned out to be a torn ACL in his left knee, a white towel draped over his head, and backup quarterback Gardner Minshew throwing an interception to Derwin James that gave the Los Angeles Chargers a win over one of their biggest rivals.

It all happened in the final two minutes of their 16-13 victory Sunday.

Justin Herbert, playing through a broken left hand, had helped the Chargers take the lead with a second-half rally, but Kansas City got the ball back with one more chance. Mahomes was sprinting toward the sideline and throwing the ball away when he was spun to the ground by defensive lineman Da'Shawn Hand, leaving the two-time MVP grabbing at his left knee.

“It didn't look good,” Chiefs coach Andy Reid acknowledged afterward.

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. (AP) — The New England Patriots are still in good position to win the AFC East. But the Buffalo Bills made sure it would have to happen on another day, against a different opponent.

Josh Allen threw three touchdown passes, and James Cook ran for two TDs and caught another as the Bills rallied from a 21-0 deficit to beat New England 35-31 on Sunday, preventing the Patriots from clinching the division title.

Allen finished 19 of 28 for 193 yards. Cook ran 22 times for 107 yards, and Dawson Knox had two TD catches for the Bills (10-4), who avoided being swept by a division opponent for the first time since 2019 and moved within one game of the Patriots. Buffalo reached 10 wins for the seventh consecutive season.

“No matter what the score is, if it’s in the third quarter, in the fourth quarter, whatever it is, if we’ve got a chance and we’ve got the ball, we feel like we like our chances," Allen said.
