Massey falls to Churchill in quarters

By Thomas Friesen 4 minute read Sunday, Mar. 15, 2026

WINNIPEG — It took a curated assembly of elite talent to end the Vincent Massey Vikings’ dream.

The group of Brandon basketball players came together years ago, worked on their games each summer and felt they could do what no Wheat City high school team had done in more than two decades — reach the AAAA boys’ final four.

But a star-studded Churchill Bulldogs team proved far too much to handle on Thursday, running away with a 111-81 victory in the provincial quarterfinals at Fort Richmond Collegiate.

“When you got guys that play basketball 24/7, you know they’re eventually going to get theirs,” said Vikings coach Brett Nohr.

Vikings advance with Nohr’s first provincial win

WINNIPEG — Brett Nohr has his first AAAA provincial victory, and the Vincent Massey Vikings sure had to earn it.

They dug themselves a double-digit hole and never put the game out of reach, but defended their way to a 73-64 win over the Garden City Gophers at Pembina Trails Collegiate on Thursday.

“It was good, I felt good not only for myself but for the kids, for (assistant coach) Derek (Barnett) and (Gil) Cheung, who’s been helping me,” Nohr said.

“It’s a group effort and our kids played hard. The kids who didn’t play, their emotions on the bench were good, they were excited to be here, they were helping their teammates out.”

WINNIPEG — Experience was everything on Thursday.

The Daniel McIntyre Maroons started the AAAA varsity girls’ basketball provincial game like they’d been there before, while the same couldn’t be said for the Crocus Plainsmen.

Two bad stretches spelled the end of the season for the Plainsmen in a 65-49 play-in round loss at Vincent Massey Collegiate.

“Our collective basketball games in our … career is certainly lower than theirs,” Hartman said of the Winnipeg school, adding his team showed grit to stay in it after a slow start.

WINNIPEG — A small slighting might be just what the Vincent Massey Vikings needed this week.

Ranked No. 4 in AAAA varsity boys’ basketball at the end of the season, the Vikings were dropped to sixth without losing a game since Feb. 20, and take on the wildcard Garden City Gophers to open provincials at Pembina Trails Collegiate today at 5:30 p.m.

The drop is justifiable, and a result of upsets in Winnipeg zone championships, and it isn’t fazing the Vikings, who haven’t played a top-end team in three weeks and now get a tune-up before their biggest games of the year.

“I like it. I like being on the opposite side of the No. 1 seed (Dakota Lancers),” said senior forward Callum Brosseau. “It gives us a great chance to test out Churchill.

The Vincent Massey Vikings sent a not-so-friendly reminder of just how tough an out they will be this post-season.

The Vikings (3-0) flexed their muscles early and often in Game 1 of their Westman High School Hockey League best-of-three semifinal matchup as they tamed the Neepawa Tigers (2-2) 6-1 at the Sportsplex on Tuesday evening.

Forwards Ethen Church and Addax Egan scored two goals each for Massey, while Joe Balabanski and Vaughn McLeod added singles to help their club cruise to a crucial Game 1 victory. Ian Foster’s power-play goal in the third period was the lone marker for Neepawa.

Church, who opened the scoring for the Vikings 10 minutes into the first frame and then added another for the eventual game winner two minutes 20 seconds remaining in the period, said his team played a complete game for 60 minutes.

The Vincent Massey Vikings completed the formality that was the Zone 15 championship on Monday night.

Up next is the tournament they’ve been thinking about and expecting to be in all year. They defeated the host Crocus Plainsmen 101-51 in Game 2 of the varsity boys’ basketball city final, and were the fourth-ranked team in AAAA in the latest Manitoba High Schools Athletic Association power rankings.

Unless they drop a spot, they’ll have a bye to the quarterfinals, meaning head coach Brett Nohr will make it past the play-in round for the first time.

Massey has been talking about this time of year for a while now.

The Vincent Massey Vikings are now in the driver’s seat.

The Vikings (1-0) took the edge in Game 1 of their best-of-three quarterfinals matchup against the Hamiota/Rivers/Elton/Strathclair Huskies (0-1) following a 2-0 victory in the Westman High School Hockey League playoffs at the Sportsplex on Sunday evening.

Massey forwards Joe Balabanski and Cole Adams tallied unassisted goals in the first two frames, while starting netminder Hunter Gregory stopped all 30 shots to put the Huskies on the ropes heading back to Hamiota for Game 2 on Wednesday.

Vikings head coach Brent Blaine said the tight-checking affair was exactly what he had anticipated.

Gregory, Vikings ready to defend Westman title

Massimo De Luca-Taronno 7 minute read Friday, Feb. 27, 2026

The time has finally come for the Vincent Massey Vikings to defend their title.

The Vikings (24-3-1) begin their shot at back-to-back Westman High School Hockey League playoff championships with a best-of-three quarterfinals duel against the Hamiota/Rivers/Elton/Strathclair Huskies (16-12) at the Sportsplex Sunday evening.

Massey, who claimed the WHSHL title last year following a perfect 32-0 run in the regular season before edging the Dauphin Clippers in the final, is certainly feeling the pressure to stay on top, but head coach Brent Blaine expects his team to be ready for whatever will be thrown its way.

“The guys are really looking forward to it,” Blaine said on Friday. “I think anytime you’re a defending champion, it doesn’t matter whether it’s regular season or playoffs, every team they’re playing you, they want to bring their best game just to show that they can play with you. Every team seems to bring our A game against us, so we’ve got to bring our A game too.”

Foster staying consistent with Tigers

By Massimo De Luca-Taronno 5 minute read Monday, Feb. 9, 2026

If there’s anyone who knows how to raise the bar year after year, it’s Ian Foster.

Just when it seems the 17-year-old forward for the Westman High School Hockey League’s Neepawa Tigers will have a hard time topping his offensive totals from his previous season, he finds a way and reminds everyone how high his ceiling really is.

It all started for Foster in his rookie season with the Tigers, when at the age of 15, he notched 31 goals and 59 points in just 39 WHSHL games. He also tallied seven more goals and 15 points in the annual Neepawa Slasher Showdown and Victoria Inn tournaments, boosting his overall totals to 38 goals and 74 points.

It was a picture perfect rookie season and it only got better in his second campaign with Neepawa last year, when the classic “sophomore slump” was most definitely not in play.
