Neelin badminton duo captures provincial gold

Thomas Friesen 3 minute read Tuesday, May. 5, 2026

It turns out Leonides McDaniel and Dana Linov weren’t just the best high school badminton duo in Brandon this year.

The Neelin Spartans mixed doubles team continued their undefeated run through the city championships at provincials, sweeping Jeanne-Sauve’s Surabhi Kishore and Quinn Lagacé 21-15, 21-13 in the gold-medal match in Winnipeg on Saturday.

They dropped just one set all season to the No. 1-ranked Fort Richmond squad in their semifinal, a match McDaniel said should have been the final. When they survived the scare, topping Xiaolin Liu and Yijia Sun 21-13, 18-21, 21-12, they weren’t worried about their final matchup.

“They were solid, but honestly, I felt like me and Dana were very confident going into that game,” McDaniel said.

Vikings survive scare against Spartans

Thomas Friesen 4 minute read Tuesday, May. 5, 2026

Jordan Woloski’s role on Tuesday was way busier than usual.

At least, Vincent Massey defenders haven’t had much pressure from the Neelin Spartans lately. But the Spartans hit the Vikings’ net for the first time since 2019 and forced the senior centre back to be sharp to hold off the comeback bid in a 2-1 Massey victory on home turf.

The Vikings improved to 2-0, dropping the Spartans to 0-2 halfway through the Brandon High School Soccer League girls’ season.

“They have a really strong team this year and like to put the pressure on very fast. Our defence definitely had a lot more pressure than we’re used to,” Woloski said, adding defender Soleil Kaktins was a big help at the back.

Beckwith brilliant as Spartans drop Vikings

Emily Beckwith made the best offensive and defensive plays of the game at Ashley Neufeld Softball Complex on Tuesday.

Her favourite play, however, was neither of them.

“My favourite play was when my sister caught the ball and I ran into her and we got a little hug over there in right centre,” Beckwith said of Hayley’s huge catch to help seal a 12-5 run-rule victory for the Spartans over the Vincent Massey Vikings.

“It was like a foot away, it was close to being over.”

Langston, Vikings blank Spartans

Massimo De Luca-Taronno 5 minute read Wednesday, Apr. 29, 2026

Lucas Langston saw an opportunity and didn’t think twice.

The 16-year-old wing for the Vincent Massey Vikings was due for a goal and chose not to wait any longer as he pounced on a turnover from the opposition and buried a right-footed touch past goalkeeper Devin Lucas en route to a 3-0 victory over the Neelin Spartans during Brandon High School Soccer League boys action at Neelin on Wednesday.

“That was probably my first goal in like five years or something, so it felt pretty good,” said Langston with a chuckle post-game. “Their defender just missed the turn, I guess and didn’t have a touch on it, so I just had a simple touch past him, and then their keeper was too far in, so I had the wide post open and shot it.”

Langston, who’s in his third season with the black and purple, notched his insurance marker off Yusuf Eltawil’s defensive fumble with just a few minutes to spare in a first half that was dominated by the visitors. Massey controlled the pace of play from the get-go with its aggression and it proved to be too much for Neelin to handle, as the only times it wasn’t scrambled in its own end was when Lucas booted the ball downfield in hopes of kickstarting a hailmary game plan.

Vikings start, finish strong in close opener

Thomas Friesen 4 minute read Tuesday, Apr. 28, 2026

If the Vincent Massey Vikings are a provincial championship favourite, some of their stiffest competition is apparently quite close to home.

The Neelin Spartans pushed last year’s softball silver medallist to the brink before the Vikings broke it open for a 12-5 victory in their Brandon High School Softball League season opener at Ashley Neufeld Softball Complex on Tuesday.

Neelin tied it 5-5 in the top of the sixth inning before Massey rattled off seven runs to invoke the run rule.

Vikings catcher and third baseman Rachel Lyver blasted a two-run moon shot in the sixth, but felt the key hit was a much, much shorter one earlier in the frame.

Vikings enter softball season with high hopes

The Vincent Massey Vikings entered last softball season with high expectations for a young team.

Despite having no seniors on the roster, they achieved their goal of reaching the provincial final. Of course, the bar is higher this year as the Vikings chase their first gold medal since 2007.

“That was the goal last year, just to get to that game. Building on it this year, because we have pretty much the same group,” said Grade 12 pitcher Brynna Andrew, ahead of today’s season opener against the Neelin Spartans.

Andrew is one of four pitchers on the squad, playing one more high school season with seniors Macey McIvor and Kendra Grift, with whom she’ll also play under-19 Westman Magic AAA ball this summer.

Timi Fadare heard comments directed at his teammate, but didn’t react.

A minute later, he calculated his response.

The Vincent Massey striker seized his moment to fire a left-footed rocket past Crocus Plainsmen goalkeeper Sani Ameh for the game-winner as the Vikings won the Brandon High School Soccer League boys season opener 2-1 at Massey on Monday.

After the shot, Fadare stood, stared at Plainsmen defender Mohamad Alabeid and held his finger over his mouth before jogging back.

Sophia Strukhlyak had one question after four unbeaten hours of badminton on Tuesday.

“Can I go home now?” she asked coach Kelly DeRoo, after dominating the JV girls singles city championship field.

The Vincent Massey sophomore ran the table without dropping a game, defeating Chesta Patel 2-0 in the final. The event started at 4 p.m. and ended well after 8 o’clock.

“It’s really tough, honestly, I was sweating and wanted to cry a bit but I toughed it out,” Strukhlyak said with a laugh.

Saumya Patel just wanted to have fun.

The Grade 12 student had yet to make a Crocus Plainsmen sports team, having been cut for soccer twice. He tried out for badminton last year, but didn’t make it, either.

Fast forward a year, and he not only cracked the roster, but won the varsity boys’ singles city championship on home court on Monday.

“There was kind of a motivation, but the goal was to have fun, not to win anything,” Patel said.
